MONTPELIER >> The Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles has a new enforcement and safety director.
Capt. William (Jake) Elovirta is replacing Glen Button, who retired in September.
The 49-year-old Elovirta of Winooski started his full-time law enforcement career in 1988 as a police officer in Burlington. He also worked assignments in uniform patrol, airport operations, traffic safety, community based policing and as a detective assigned to the Chittenden State's Attorney's Domestic Violence Unit.
In 1998, he was selected by then-DMV Commissioner Patricia MacDonald to be the first Safety Chief in DMV's Enforcement and Safety Division.
Elovirta has supervised the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section for the past 17 years, and most recently has served as the interim Enforcement and Safety Division Director.
