COLCHESTER, VT. >> A Vermont weekly newspaper says it's going to fight an effort by prosecutors to require three of its journalists to provide information related to the sexual assault case against Franklin County Sen. Norm McAllister.

The Burlington-based weekly newspaper Seven Days says prosecutors ordered reporter Mark Davis, political editor Paul Heintz and news editor Matthew Roy to appear in court later this month with notes and materials related to their reporting on the case.

The paper reports Deputy Franklin County State's Attorney Diane Wheeler says the reporters' direct contact with McAllister, as well as one of his accusers, makes them witnesses.

McAllister has pleaded not guilty to a variety of sex charges.

Seven Days Publisher Paula Routly tells Vermont Public Radio the prosecutors' request threatens freedom of the press.
