MONTPELIER, VT. >> A Vermont Senate committee has voted to recommend to the full Senate that it suspend Sen. Norm McAllister while criminal sex charges are pending against him.
The 64-year-old McAllister has denied three felony and three misdemeanor charges in connection with alleged sexual misconduct. Authorities say one of his alleged victims had worked with him as an intern at the Legislature.
The Franklin County Republican, whose trial is tentatively set for March, has rejected calls for him to resign, and some senators had been calling for expelling McAllister if he did not give up his seat before the Legislature reconvenes in January.
The resolution approved Wednesday calls for suspension, rather than outright expulsion. It's expected to be voted on shortly after the Senate convenes in January.
