SOUTH BURLINGTON (AP) -- South Burlington police say a bus driver for a day care for dogs suffered burns while trying to save trapped canines after the vehicle caught on fire.

The driver rescued one dog but another died.

Police Sgt. James Mills tells the Burlington Free Press that a 911 call was made Tuesday afternoon reporting a small bus on fire in a parking lot.

Mills says the driver of the Gulliver's Doggie Daycare bus called his supervisor to report the smell of smoke inside the bus. The front of the bus caught on fire and the flames quickly spread.

Mills says the driver suffered burns to his hands and his back while trying to retrieve the two dogs. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Mills says the driver "did everything he could" to save both animals. The driver's name hasn't been released
