FORT DRUM, N.Y. (AP) -- The Department of Defense says a brigade combat team from the Army's Fort Drum in northern New York will be one of three units to go to Afghanistan this winter.

The 2nd Brigade Combat Team of 10th Mountain Division will join brigade combat teams from the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Ky., and the 1st Armored Divisions at Fort Bliss, Texas, as the latest units to deploy to the 11-year-old war in Afghanistan.

A total of about 9,600 soldiers are involved in the deployment, including about 2,800 from Fort Drum.

The 10th Mountain Division has been one the Army's most deployed fighting forces over the past two decades.
