WATER MILL, N.Y. (AP) -- Police are searching for a driver involved in a hit-run accident that killed a nun on Long Island.
Sister Jacqueline Walsh, of Syosset, N.Y., was found lying next to a road in Water Mill around 8:30 p.m. Monday, Southampton police said. She had been on a retreat with her colleagues from the Sisters of Mercy.
Detectives located a car with front end damage about a half-mile from the scene and were asking anyone with information to call 631-702-2230.
Walsh had been working at St. Edward Confessor Church in Syosset for about 10 years, said Deacon Jim Murphy.
She was "an indispensable and loved servant to the people," he said, adding that her efforts there including ministering to the sick and dying, as well as training young people to join the altar service.
Murphy said the retreat was an annual event that Walsh would have been there from Monday, and had been scheduled to be there until Friday.
He said the church received word of Walsh’s death Monday night, and "there’s great sorrow because it’s an almost undefinable loss to our parish."
A prayer service for Walsh was being held Tuesday night, with a wake planned for Friday and a funeral Mass on Saturday.
