ST. JOHNSBURY >> The 9-10 all-stars from the Bennington Little League are still alive in the state tournament that began over the weekend at St. Johnsbury.
After the tournament was delayed because of storms on Friday, Bennington started against South Burlington on Saturday and won an 8-3 decision to advance to face Lyndon on Sunday.
Against Lyndon, Bennington fell 12-1 to get knocked into the loser's bracket. Lyndon automatically moves to the championship, while Bennington has to play South Burlington in an elimination game on Friday. The winner of that game plays on Saturday.
The winner of the state tournament advances to the regionals in Cranston, R.I., starting August 5.
Wiffle ball tournament for MAU class of 2017
BENNINGTON >> The Mount Anthony Class of 2017 will hold a family-friendly wiffle ball tournament on Sunday, August 21, starting at 3 p.m., to raise funds to support graduation activities for students.
Games will be held at the NorShaft Lions Park and Welling Field in North Bennington. Teams can be composed of up to eight people and the cost is $75 per team. Each team will be guaranteed two games because the tournament is double elimination.
Prizes will be awarded for the Winning Team, Best Dressed, Most Team Spirit, Team with the Greatest Age Range, and Sportsmanship Award. The raindate will be Monday, August 22.

BENNINGTON >> The New England Alliance Girls Fast Pitch Softball tryouts will be held at the Mount Anthony Union Middle School, located at 747 East Road, Bennington.
Tryouts for U14 and U16 players are August 13 from 10 a.m. to noon, and August 20 from 10 a.m. to noon. Rain dates are the next day at the same time.
If you are unable to attend these dates and times we will hold individual tryouts for ladies unable to attend the posted tryout dates and times.

HOOSICK, N.Y. >> Registration is open for the fall 2016 season of in-house recreation Youth Soccer at the Hoosick Falls Soccer Club. The group is running an early bird special registration price of $45 from July 20 to August 15.
Vermont soccer official training
BENNINGTON >> Anyone interested in becoming a member of the Vermont Soccer Officials Association and becoming eligible to officiate varsity and sub-varsity soccer games is encouraged to attend a training in Southern Vermont.
The training is being held at Whitcomb High School in Bethel on August 27 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The training includes learning the rules of the game, a test, and a field practice. The cost of the program is $75 which includes the cost of the membership in the VSOA for this year. ARLINGTON >> Retired Arlington and Castleton soccer coach John Werner will again be running soccer camps locally. Werner and his experienced staff are committed to providing a quality camp experience, with the emphasis on learning and fun, at a reasonable cost.
The two remaining camps sessions are as follows:
The Arlington Soccer Camp for those entering grades 1 through 8 will be held the week of Aug. 1 from 9 a.m. until noon at Arlington High School.
This camp also emphasizes the technical development of each player as well as small group tactics.
The Arlington Senior Soccer Camp for those entering grades 9 through 12 will be held the week of Aug. 1 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Arlington High School.
This camp includes position specific training.

SVC cross-country camp
BENNINGTON >> Southern Vermont College head cross country and track and field coach Kathleen Newton has announced that she will be holding her first summer clinic on Tuesday, August 9 at the SVC campus.
The event will run from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. and is intended for children entering grades 7-12. The cost is $50 per participant with all proceeds to benefit the SVC cross country programs. In the event of rain, the clinic will be held Wednesday, August 10. The camp will begin at the Mountaineer Athletic Center.
Members of the Southern Vermont cross country teams will be on hand to guide the partakers through the day and around the College campus. Activities will include showing how to properly warm up, the teaching of correct running technique, strength exercises, injury prevention and treatment, and a stretching session. The Mountaineers will also lead the participants on trail runs around the SVC campus.
