MANCHESTER — On Monday, the Batten Kill Valley Runners held their annual "Four on the Fourth," four kilometer race at Dana L. Thompson Park.

Runners participating in the race were separated by their age and gender into two groups.

Winning the men's 50 and under race was Kam Husain with a time of 23 minutes and 36 seconds.

Coming in second place was Tim McGarry, and finishing out the top three in the race was Clay Papanek.

In the men's 50 and over race, Ward Kane came in first place with a time of 24:55 and was followed up by second place finisher Raymond Chen and third place finisher Marc Berson.

On the women's side of the event, Katherine Ogden took first place in the 50 and under race with a time of 24:51.

Sondra Papanek came in second place and Nicole Ambrosecchio came in third.

In the 50 and over race, Lisa Ferwel won with a time of 32:27.

Bettina Tuttle and Leslie Addison rounded out the top three with their respective second and third place finishes.

SVC cross-country camp

BENNINGTON >> Southern Vermont College head cross country and track and field coach Kathleen Newton has announced that she will be holding her first summer clinic on Tuesday, August 9 at the SVC campus.

The event will run from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. and is intended for children entering grades 7-12. The cost is $50 per participant with all proceeds to benefit the SVC cross country programs. In the event of rain, the clinic will be held Wednesday, August 10. The camp will begin at the Mountaineer Athletic Center.


Members of the Southern Vermont cross country teams will be on hand to guide the partakers through the day and around the College campus. Activities will include showing how to properly warm up, the teaching of correct running technique, strength exercises, injury prevention and treatment, and a stretching session. The Mountaineers will also lead the participants on trail runs around the SVC campus.

Youth lax camp at Willow Park

BENNINGTON >> The Southern Vermont Youth Lacrosse camp for boys will be held in Willow Park from July 11 to July 14.

The camp for players ages 6-8 will attend from 9 to 11 a.m. while the 9-16 age group will attend from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

This is a great camp to introduce the sport of lacrosse to new players and equipment is available for those who need it.

The cost is $75 for 6-8 year olds and $150 for 9-16 year olds.

Southern Vermont football camp

MANCHESTER >> The Sparxx Athletics football camp for youth players will run from July 11 to 14 at Taylor Field on the campus of Burr and Burton Academy.

The camp, which goes each day from 5 to 8 p.m., will showcase the top college and high school football players in the area in a hands-on experience to improve the grassroots of football.

The cost to attend the camp is $100, and $125 after June 1.

Werner holding annual soccer camps

ARLINGTON >> Retired Arlington and Castleton soccer coach John Werner will again be running soccer camps locally. Werner and his experienced staff are committed to providing a quality camp experience, with the emphasis on learning and fun, at a reasonable cost.

The three camps are as follows:

The Battenkill Soccer Camp for those entering grades 1 through 8 will be held the week of July 18 from 9 a.m. until noon at Greenwich Central School in Greenwich, N.Y. This camp emphasizes the technical development of each player as well as small group tactics.

The Arlington Soccer Camp for those entering grades 1 through 8 will be held the week of Aug. 1 from 9 a.m. until noon at Arlington High School.

The Arlington Senior Soccer Camp for those entering grades 9 through 12 will be held the week of Aug. 1 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Arlington High School.
