BENNINGTON — The start of the summer season began for the Bennington Marauders on Tuesday afternoon.

Bennington's swim club team had a rocking crowd on hand for the team's first meet of the summer and the Marauders' performance didn't disappoint.

The Marauders grabbed the top spot in the boys division, with Brattleboro coming in second and Springfield finishing in third.

Bennington got some great performances in the pool from their boys, starting with Zach LaForest.

LaForest placed first in four races on the day, winning the 50 yard freestyle, butterfly and backstroke, and capped it off with a win the in 100 yard freestyle.

He was also part of the Marauders 200 yard medley and freestyle relay teams that placed first in the meet as well.

Morgan Flynn had a nice day on the lane for the Marauders with a first place finish in the 50 yard breaststroke and grabbing second finishes in the 50 yard freestyle and the 100 yard breaststroke.

On the girls side, the Marauders fell short, coming in second place to Brattleboro by a mere 238 points.

There were still, though, great performances put on display by the Marauaders' girls squad.

Phebe Hall had a banner day in the pool for Bennington, grabbing first places in the 50 yard freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke.

Hall had a second place finish in the 100 yard backstroke too.

Grace Burhans was also a speed demon in the water for the Marauders in the 13-14 age group, placing first in the 100 yard IM and the 50 yard butterfly and backstroke.

In the 11-12 division, Elyse Altland had big day for the Marauders with first places finishes in the 100 yard IM and breaststroke races.

Altland also placed second in the 50 yard breaststroke in the meet.

Brattleboro took home the overall team first place prize, topping Bennington by a score of 2,071 to 1,998 in the meet, but that didn't erase what was a great day for the Marauaders in the mind of coach Nicole Goswami.

"It was a fantastic first meet," said Goswami. "We had several new swimmers experience competitive swimming for the first time. I was pleased to see many of my returning swimmers so close to their best times this early in the season. All of that leads me to believe that the summer session will be very successful."

The Marauders next swim meet for the summer will be next Tuesday against Springfield at 5 p.m.
