WHITE RIVER JUNCTION >> They're off the schneid. The Mount Anthony boys tennis team earned their first match win of the season on Friday afternoon, defeating Hartford, 4-3.
MAU's No. 2 singles Jacob Damour got the first win of the day for the Patriots, winning a three-match thriller by coming back from losing the first set 6-4 to winning the second set 6-4 and then winning 10-8 in the tiebreaker.
No. 3 singles player Luke Williams followed up Damour's win by also coming back from losing the first set 6-4, to winning the second set 6-2 and then winning the tiebreaker 10-6 to give the Patriots their second match win of the afternoon.
The Patriots then went on to win the last two singles matches, with No. 4 player Thomas Ngo winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-0 and No. 5 player Brendan Hay winning by forfeit, sealing up MAU's first win of the season.
Both doubles pairs for MAU lost, with their No. 2 pair of Aaron Hulett and Jeson Li losing in straight sets, while the Patriots' No. 1 doubles pair of Griffin Mattison and Peter Drew dropped their match in three sets.
Mattison and Drew came back from losing the first set 6-3 to winning the second set 6-4, but couldn't pull off the comeback with losing 10-5 in the tiebreaker.
No. 1 singles player Pj Seward lost in straight sets 6-2, 6-0 for MAU.
MAU will try to keep their winning roll going when they host Rutland on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
