NORTH ADAMS, MASS. — The Southern Vermont College women's lacrosse team came up short in a overtime thriller against MCLA on Wednesday, blowing a two-goal lead with five minutes to go in regulation and losing 14-13 to the Trailblazers in the extra period.

Junior Mel Orrell scored a season-high five goals to lead all scorers in the loss for the Mountaineers.

Junior Emily Lesure scored four goals on the day for SVC, while fellow junior Lauren Nesshoever added a pair of goals herself to the Mountaineers 13 goal tally as well.

With the loss, SVC drops to 1-5 on the season.

The Mountaineers will look get back on the winning track come Saturday when they travel to play New England Collegiate Conference Mitchell at 1 p.m.

MAU boys lax drop season opener

GLENS FALLS, N.Y. >> In their season-opener against Glens Falls on Wednesday, the Mount Anthony Union High School boys lacrosse team nearly fought back in the fourth quart, but came up on the short end of a 7-5 loss.

Trailing 7-3 after the third quarter where the Patriots (0-1) went scoreless, MAU scored a pair of goals and nearly scored with 40 seconds left to cut the deficit to one, but the Indians were able to clear and finish the win.

"I told the kids that we just need to keep chipping away and we almost got there," said Mark Lange after coaching his first game for the Patriots.


Jeremy Bourgeois was the only Patriot with multiple goals, scoring twice. Thomas Hendery, Hunter Davis and Matt Pellon each added single tallies, while Trey Lange and Jackson Thibodeau each had assists.

Thibodeau also made 19 saves in the cage to keep his team in the contest throughout.

Aiden Defelice had three goals to lead Glens Falls, who improve to 2-0.

Masters swim meet on docket

BENNINGTON >> The fifth annual Monumental Masters Mini Meet will be held this Saturday at the Bennington Recreation Center.

Adults over the age of 18 are encouraged to participate in the meet.

No prior competition experience is required.

Warm-ups start at 9 a.m., with the meet's first event beginning at 10 a.m.

If still want to compete, there is $25 registration charge that you will pay on the day of the event.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Bennington Marauders Swim Team, helping to provide youth swimming for our community.

Zem-Benn Road Race date announced

NORTH BENNINGTON >> The 38th running of the Steve Zemianek Bennington Road Race is scheduled to take place on Sunday, May 8, at the Park McCullough house.

There will be three races held at the event, with the kids' 1k race starting at 9:30 a.m. and will be followed by the 3.9 and 10K races that are both scheduled to start at 10 a.m.

Since the event is taking place on Mother's Day, the mother who finishes first in her age group will receive a special award.

Proceeds for the event will benefit the Steve Zemianek scholarship fund at Mount Anthony Union High School.

As in previous years, the lead sponsor of the race will be Southwestern Vermont Medical Center Orthopaedics.

To participate in the event, people can sign up at or pick up a registration form at Wills Insurance, AnytimeFitness, Revolution Fitness, and the Bennington Recreation center.

Runners who compete in the Gallup to Success trail race scheduled for May 7 at Kimberly Farms in Shaftsbury will receive a registration fee discount for signing up for both races.
