CHICOPEE, MASS. >> The Southern Vermont College softball team opened up New England Collegiate Conference play on Thursday afternoon, losing both games of a doubleheader against Elms College, 14-0 and 14-6.
In the first game, the Mountaineers fell into a deep hole when Elms struck for five runs in the first inning to get out to an early lead.
Elms then tacked on a run in the second inning, followed by three runs in the third to extend their lead to 9-0.
Then in the fourth, the Blazers repeated what they did in the first inning, tacking on five runs and went on to a shutout victory.
Freshman Taylor Blake pitched a complete game for SVC in the loss, giving 14 runs (10 earned) on 12 hits.
Freshman Lizzy Bench had a team-high two hits in the loss for the Mountaineers.
After being shutout in game one, the Mountaineers came back with vengeance in game two, getting out to a 3-2 lead going to the bottom of the second inning.
SVC's lead though didn't last long as the Elms offense erupted for eight runs in the second inning and then two runs in the third inning for a 12-3 lead.
The Mountaineers battled back though, scoring two runs in the fourth inning and a run in the fifth inning to make it a 12-6 game, but that was as close as they got the Blazers, who tacked on two more runs in the bottom half of the fifth to help seal the sweep.
Senior Rachel Robtoy went 3-for-4 at the plate for SVC with 2 RBIs in the losing effort.
Sophomore Nicole Matthews had a team-high 3 RBIs on two hits in the loss for SVC as well.
With the two losses, SVC drops to 0-8 to start the season.
SVC will try get their first win of the season when they travel to play MCLA on Thursday in a doubleheader.
First pitch for game one is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
Masters swim meet on docket
BENNINGTON >> The fifth annual Monumental Masters Mini Meet will be held on Saturday, April 9, at the Bennington Recreation Center.
Adults over the age of 18 are encouraged to participate in the meet.
No prior competition experience is required.
Warm-ups start at 9 a.m., with the meet's first event beginning at 10 a.m.
Pre-registration to compete in the event is $20 per swimmer by April 5, or $25 on the day of the event.
Registration forms are available at the Bennington Rec Center.
All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Bennington Marauders Swim Team, helping to provide youth swimming for our community.

Village School hosting Shamrockin' 5K
NORTH BENNINGTON >> On Saturday, April 2, the Village School of North Bennington will host the second annual Shamrockin' run/walk event.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. with the 1-mile Family Fun Run/Walk starting at 9 a.m. and the 5K Run/Walk starting at 10 a.m. The race starts at the Village School of North Bennington, which is between School Street and Church Street.
The cost for the 5K is $20 for registrations postmarked by March 25 and $25 for race day registration. The 1-mile Family Fun Run/Walk is $10. Preregister by mail by sending a checks made payable to VSNB to: VSNB, PO Box 847, N. Bennington, VT 05257 or by registering online at Runreg.com.

Zem-Benn Road Race date announced
NORTH BENNINGTON >> The 38th running of the Steve Zemianek Bennington Road Race is scheduled to take place on Sunday, May 8, at the Park McCullough house.
There will be three races held at the event, with the kid's 1k race starting at 9:30 a.m. and will be followed by the 3.9 and 10K races that are both scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
Since the event is taking place on Mother's Day, the mother who finishes first in her age group will receive a special award.
Proceeds for the event will benefit the Steve Zemianek scholarship fund at Mount Anthony Union High School.
As in previous years, the lead sponsor of the race will be Southwestern Vermont Medical Center Orthopaedics.
To participate in the event, people can sign up at Runreg.com or pick up a registration form at Wills Insurance, AnytimeFitness, Revolution Fitness, and the Bennington Recreation center.
Runners who compete in the Gallup to Success trail race scheduled for May 7 at Kimberly Farms in Shaftsbury will receive a registration fee discount for signing up for both races.
