HOOSICK FALLS, N.Y. >> Spring is here, well not technically, but the spring sports season has officially arrived for a couple local teams.

On Monday, the spring sports season began for high schools across the state of New York, which cemented the first day of practice for members of the Hoosick Falls Central School baseball team, who were all happy to get the season started.

"Really excited to get the season going and getting to work with my teammates," said senior Wyatt Whitman. "I have been training all winter to get ready for the season and just really excited to get this baseball season started."

As for the first practice for most sports, the Panthers started out the year working on the basics.

That included pitchers getting their arms loose from throwing off the mound and hitters getting their swings in the batting cage and off the tee.

"It was nice to get the arm loose and take couple swings in the batting cage after not doing so for a while," said senior Wyatt Cushman. "It was good first practice. The guys were all excited to be back to playing baseball and everybody got some good work in today."

Their will be some high expectations for the Panther 2016.

Most players are back from last year's team that finished second in the Wasaren League.

"It's good to know that we have a veteran group coming back," said Hoosick Falls coach Mike Lilac. "We have solid pitching and we have guys that can play well in the field and at the plate, so we have a good group going into the season."

Even with high expectations, though, Lilac said he right now is just trying to get them into the swing of things in the first few weeks of the season.

"Right now we're just trying to get our guys back into practicing the fundamentals of baseball," Lilac said. "Bring our pitchers along slowly, but surely, so they can be ready to pitch deep into games when we start playing. For the other guys it's get their arms in shape, getting their hand-eye coordination ready in the field by fielding ground and fly balls and getting them swings in the cage. That's what we want work on in these first few weeks in practice before the season starts."

The Panthers will not play their first game of the season until the first week of April.

For the state of Vermont, the high school teams will begin their spring sport season next week.
