ESSEX JUNCTION >> The road to a state championship has come to an end for the Burr and Burton Academy girls hockey team.
BBA looked like they were poised to pull off the upset with a 3-0 lead in the second period over the No.2 seed Mount Mansfield, but the No.7 seed Bulldogs were unable to hold to their lead, giving up five unanswered Cougars' goals in the final 16 minutes of the game to lose by a final score of 5-3.
The Bulldogs took an early 3-0 lead thanks to senior Aggie Bisselle, who scored all three goals for the proverbial hat trick, finishing her Division II Player of the Year season with 43 goals scored and total of 57 points.
After a 1-8-2 start to the season, BBA went 7-2-1 in their final 10 games to finish the season at 8-11-3.
Bulldogs upset top seed Woodstock
WOODSTOCK >> In stunning upset, the No.8 seed Burr and Burton Academy boys hockey team defeated top-seeded Woodstock on Wednesday night, 2-1, to advance to semifinals of the Division II tournament.
After a scoreless first period of the hockey, the Bulldogs on goals from sophomore's Samuel Cottrell and Jay McCoy to take a 2-0 lead over the Wasps in the second period.
In the third period Woodstock finally got on the board to make it a one goal game, but could not get another one past BBA goaltender Jeremy Fleming and the underdog Bulldogs would hold on for the upset victory.
BBA will now face the winner of Stowe/Milton in the semifinals.
SVC Men's Basketball Ranked 10th in NCAA DIII Northeast
BENNINGTON >> For the third straight week, the Southern Vermont College men's basketball team has been ranked 10th in the NCAA Division III Northeast regional rankings.
The Mountaineers held their position once again after finishing their regular season last week with a pair of New England Collegiate Conference wins.
SVC improved to 22-3 overall on the year with wins over Elms and Daniel Webster to finish NECC league play at a perfect 16-0 for the second straight season.
The Mountaineers bring a 14-game winning streak into this weekend's NECC postseason tournament which is set to have the semifinals and championship rounds hosted by SVC on Friday and Saturday.
The top-seeded Mountaineers will face-off against No. 5 Regis in a 2015 title game rematch on Friday in the semifinals at 6 p.m.
VPA Senior All-Star games
BENNINGTON >> On Saturday, March 12, the Vermont Basketball Coaches' Association will present the Senior All Star Games at Windsor High School.
Each team will be filled with the top senior boys and girls players in their divisions.
The four games will follow a somewhat North v. South format, with both the boys and girls Division IV and Division III teams squaring off against one another, while both the boys and girls Division II and Division I teams will each face one another.
MAU semifinal tickets available at the school
BENNINGTON >> Tickets for the Division I boys basketball semifinals at the University of Vermont on Saturday, Feb. 27, are on sale at the Mount Anthony Union High School activities office on Wednesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Friday from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens.
All tickets being sold for these games are general admission and are good for entrance to both the 1 p.m. game between No. 2 Rice and No. 3 Rutland, and the 3 p.m. game between No. 1 Burlington and No. 4 MAU.
Bennington Little League sign-up
BENNINGTON >> Late registration and player evaluations for the 2016 season will be held on Sunday, March 6, from 12:30-3:30 p.m. and Tuesday, March 8, from 5:30-8 p.m. at the MAUHS gymnasium.
All players ages 9 and up should plan to attend one of the two dates for evaluations unless already on a major league team.
Late registrations will also be taken at this time for any players ages 5 through 12 in the Bennington and surrounding areas.
For all new registrants, a copy of the birth certificate is required at the time of registration.
