Bennington All-Stars details

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- On Sunday night, the Bennington All-Stars won their second game at the Babe Ruth 13-15 New England Regional with a 6-3 decision over the hosts from Manchester.

Bennington got on the board first in the top of the first inning. Carter Bentley (1-3) led off with a walk, then moved to second on a single by Griff Stalcup (2-3). Two batters later, Condo advanced Bentley to third on a deep fly to right. With two outs, Bentley and Stalcup combined for a double steal, allowing Bentley to score. In the second, Bennington doubled the lead with an RBI by Ryan O’Neill (2-3) plated Mike Morgan, who got on base with a double.

Manchester pulled a run back in the bottom of the inning, but in the fourth Bennington plated four runs on three hits.

O’Neill plated Bush first on a single, then Morgan scored on an errant throw that allowed O’Neill to go from first to third. During the next at bat, Brian Grace brought in O’Neill on a squeeze play. After two consecutive hit-and-run plays by Bentley and Stalcup, Grace touched home to make it 6-1.

Manchester scored another run in the bottom of the inning but, with the bases loaded, Austin Condo worked himself out of the jam and limited the damage.

Manchester threatened again in the seventh, pulling in another run, but Condo responded by painting the outside corner for a called strike three to end the game.

Condo went the distance in the win, allowing nine hits and three walks with six strike outs.

Bennington now advances to the regional semifinal, and will play Waterford, Conn. with a spot in the regional final on the line. Should Bennington lose the game, the team would fall into the loser’s bracket final. Tuesday’s game will be at 8 p.m. at Gill Stadium in Manchester.

Sprint Triathlon

MANCHESTER -- The 2014 Southern Vermont Sprint Triathlon will be held on August 24 starting at 8 a.m. The SVST begins at Hunter Park (Riley Rink) with an 8-mile bike ride to Emerald Lake, a quarter-mile swim (out and back, close to the island), another 8-mile bike back to Hunter Park and a 3.4-mile run that finishes through the path from the Rec Park to Hunter Park.

"The SVST is an event designed to introduce people to triathlons," said Stephen Murphy, the race director. "The reach is mostly local from Middlebury to Williamstown (Mass.) and Greenwich (N.Y.) to Brattleboro. However, there are some people coming from out of the area as well. While triathlons have grown in popularity, it is unique to have one so close to home and at an affordable price. Most tris cost $75 or more."

To encourage more people to experience a triathlon, SVST is offering a 20 percent discount to students and teachers (please contact Hunter Park 802-362-0150 or smurphy@rileyrink.com to verify eligibility for the discount).

The proceeds from the event go to support Hunter Park to develop as a more diverse facility that will offer more to the community both in terms of healthy, fun activities and as a draw for people to make Manchester and the area a travel destination.

For more information, or to volunteer, please contact Stephen Murphy or Vanessa Beattie at 802-362-0150 or email smurphy
