LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP

FARGO, N.D. -- Newly-graduated Mount Anthony Union High School wrestler Jesse Webb is still in the hunt for a national title after the first day at the Fargo Nationals.

Competing in freestyle, Webb won his first and only match on Thursday in the 285-pound weight class, topping Colorado’s Dane Drimmer 5-0 to move to the next round. He’ll face Kentucky’s Raymel Brown next this afternoon.

At 113 pounds, Calvin Call lost his first match of the day against California’s Michael Belichak, 14-10, but won in the consolation round, 10-0, over Arkansas’ Jay Branch.

His tournament came to a close in the next round with a 11-0 tech fall against Illinois’ Cody Minnick to finish 1-2 overall.

Troy Gassaway also finished 1-2 at 126 pounds. He won his opening match, 9-4, over Maryland’s Malik Woody, but lost to Oklahoma’s Jacob Fontanez, 10-0 in a tech fall.

In his consolation match against Pennsylvania’s Kevin Kinyua, Gassaway took an early 4-0 lead on a throw, but Kinyua tied the match at 4-4 with a throw of his own, then took control in a 14-4 tech fall to knock him out of the tournament.

Dylan LaFountain lost his opening match at 138 pounds, getting tech falled, 10-0, to Nevada’s Sheldon Davis, but came back strong with two consolation wins.

First, he tech falled Oklahoma’s Thomas Miller, 16-5, using his quickness to gain fast takedown points.

That momentum carried into the next round, as he pinned Oregon’s Jared Neiss in 43 seconds.

Then, against Indiana’s Anthony Williams, LaFountain trailed 3-0, then scored a point on a pushout to get back in the match. But Williams took advantage of a stoppage, getting back-to-back throws on LaFountain for an 11-1 tech fall and finish 2-2.
