WINOOSKI -- The Bennington County Babe Ruth team punched its ticket to the state finals with two wins over the weekend, taking down Suburban 23-1 on Saturday followed by a 6-3 win over Mount Mansfield on Sunday.

With the pair of wins, Bennington moves to the finals next Sunday at Hawthorne Park in Winooski. Bennington will play the winner of the loser’s bracket game. Bennington will have to win only one game to take the state crown, while the loser’s bracket team will have to win twice.

On Saturday, Bennington posted 19 hits on Suburban to roll to the easy victory. Bennington posted four runs in the top of the first bfore Austin Condo took the mound and delivered a four hit, three strikeout, zero walk performance in just five innings of work.

Noah Normyle knocked in the first run of the day, scoring Carter Bentley on the first of his four hits in the game. Cole Lamoureaux and Brenden Hay each added RBI hits in the first, while Condo scored the last run in the inning on a fielder’s choice.

In the second inning, Bennington sent 20 batters to the plate, scoring 15 times to put the game well out of reach.

Suburban scored its lone run of the game in the second. Normyle, Condo, Hay, Griff Stalcup, Bryce Bush and Brian Grace all had multi-hit games in the win.

On Sunday, Mount Mansfield gave Bennington a much better run, but a combined four hit, five strikeout performance by Mornyle and Ryan O’Neil allowed Bennington to get the win.

Bennington struck for two runs in the in the top of the second, with O’Neil plating Bush after Bush got on with a single. Brian Grace brought in Mike Morgan on the next at bat.

Bennington scored another run in the third on an RBI by Condo, scoring Stalcup. In the fourth, Bennington added three more runs with RBI singles by O’Neil, Grace and Stalcup.

Mount Mansfield mustered a slight rally in the bottom of the fifth, knocking in two hits and capitalizing on a few defensive miscues to score the three runs.

Post 13 splits

BENNINGTON -- Bennington Post 13 ended its American Legion season by splitting two nine-inning contests over the weekend, falling to Rutland 5-2 on Saturday then recovering with a 10-7 win over Lakes Region on Sunday.

During Saturday’s loss, Post 13 fell behind 1-0 after the third but a Brady Sausville RBI sngle in the fourth plated Wyatt Whitman, then Kaz Kasumi scored a run in the seventh by capitalizing on two throwing errors.

Matt Upright got the start and pitched well for Post 13, but the Post 31 bats were able to come alive enough against Sausville, who came in relief, to pull out the win. Post 31 scored four runs in the eighth to take the win.

On Sunday, Post 13 jumped out to a 10-0 lead against Lakes Region, but had to fend off a late rally to get the win.

Post 13 struck quickly, scoring three in the first. Ellis Baker, Kasumi and Cameron Bow all plated in the inning. Bow finished the day 4-5 with three doubles.

In the third, Bow hit a double to score Kasumi, then scored on an error.

Post 13 added two more in the fifth, with Upright knocking in Bow and Zach Bahan on a double to make it 7-0. In the sixth, Bow scored Sausville and Baker on a double, then Bahan brought in Bow on a single.

Whitman took the start and went six scoreless innings for Post 13. Devin Babson came in to relieve Whitman and had to fend off a three-run seventh and a three-run ninth to see out the win.

Post 13 ends the season at 6-12.

Catamount wrestling dance

BENNINGTON -- The Catamount Wrestling club is hosting a fund raiser dance on Thursday July 24th from 7-9 pm for students in grades five through eight. The fee to get in is $5.00. The dance is at the Bennington Moose Lodge on Main Street and will be chaperoned by adult parents of Catamount Wrestling members. Proceed will benefit Catamount Wrestling.
