LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP
CASTLETON -- On Friday and Saturday, Castleton State College hosted the Twin States field hockey game and the North-South Softball Classic.
In the Twin States game, featuring a team from Vermont and New Hampshire, Mount Anthony Union High School coach Laura Paro took the helm for the last time in the state of Vermont.
Paro, who is moving to Connecticut later this summer, had one of her players in Leah Holland on the team, but the duo were handed a defeat in the Twin State game, with New Hampshire winning 6-1.
With Vermont down 1-0 at halftime, New Hampshire game out and outscored Vermont 5-1 in the second half to pull away.
Kameron Burke scored the lone goal for Vermont.
Holland and Eva Dunphy combined to make 22 saves for Vermont.
And while Vermont faced New Hampshire in field hockey, it was a North-South affair in softball.
Playing a three-game series, the South, which featured MAU’s senior quartet of Kate Goodell, Lauren Bow, Makayla Farrara and Jenna Crowley, took the first two games on Friday, while on Saturday the North responded with a win in a nine-inning contest.
Playing the 28th edition of the game, the South won 11-2 in game one and 12-2 in game two, while the North bounced back 5-2 in game three..
In game one, the South scored eight runs in the second. Hartford’s Paige Larmie had a two-run double in the inning, while West Rutland’s Taylor Raiche had two hits in the frame. Bow reached safely during the inning. Bow finished with two hits in the contest.
In game two, Crowley pitched the sixth and seventh innings, striking out three while giving up two runs. Goodell hit a double in the contest.
During Saturday’s game, Bow had a sac fly for a run and Farrara reached base in the first, but did not score.
