LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP

HOOSICK, N.Y. -- The Hoosick Hoosiers softball team continued its solid early season run with a 5-4 walk-off victory against the Classie Lassie Thunder on Thursday.

Tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh, Chelsea Stevens reached, then went to third on an error. The next hitter, Alyssa Ellis, rocketed a shot that the shortshop couldn't handle to score Stevens for the winning run.

Hoosick took a 3-0 lead early, but the Thunder tied it in the top of the fifth inning before the Hoosiers' heroics.

Cross given athlete honor

BENNINGTON -- A Mount Anthony Union H.S. lacrosse standout, a Rutland High lacrosse player, and a Middlebury College lacrosse player were elected in statewide balloting of Vermont Sports Media Association members as Athletes of the Month for April.

The VSMA picked Mount Anthony senior Emily Cross as the Female High School Athlete of the Month, Rutland senior Joe Couture as the Male High School Athlete of the Month, and Middlebury junior Katie Ritter as the Open Division Athlete of the Month.

Each was nominated by a VSMA member for his or her outstanding efforts in April.

Cross continued to break records in her final season with the Patriots. After a stellar junior season, this spring she broke the 200-point barrier in the first game of the season, the first Patriot girls lacrosse player to reach the mark. She followed that up by scoring a school-record 10 goals in a game to lift the Patriots to their first win of the season. In the team's first five games, Cross tallied 27 times to help the Patriots to a 3-2 record. Cross outpolled West Rutland softball player Kaelin Reopell for the honor.
