LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP
BURLINGTON -- The upsets just keep on coming for the Burr and Burton Academy boys lacrosse team.
Three days removed from bouncing No. 2 Stowe out of the Division II playoffs, the No. 7 Bulldogs traveled to No. 3 Burlington Tuesday for a semifinal game and returned home 7-5 winners, sending the Bulldogs into the title-decider against No. 1 Green Mountain Valley School.
Senior Ben Alexopolous led the way for BBA with three goals, including the go-ahead and game-sealing goals in the second half.
Tied 4-4 at halftime, Alexopolous put BBA up 6-5 going into the fourth quarter, then in the final frame Alexopolous found a shooting lane while BBA was running the stall offense to seal the game with 30 seconds left.
"I’m really leaning on my seniors to own this championship run," said BBA coach Jason Pergament. "Younger guys stepped up today, but in order for us to win we need the older guys to understand they have been there before."
Carter Vickers, Max Pagnucco, Tom Morgantini and Elliot Buckley all added individual goals to lead BBA.
After leading 4-0 after the first, the Bulldogs allowed the Seahorses back into the game with a two-minute locked-in penalty. Burlington struck three times in that situation to get back into the game.
"We took the second half as a fresh start," Pergament said. "We came out and dominated."
The Bulldogs will face the Gumbies on Thursday at Castleton State College.
