ALBANY, N.Y. -- Cambridge Central School sophomore Olivia Mooney won two events, leading the Indians to a fifth-place team finish at the Group 5 (Class D) sectional qualifier on Saturday at the University of Albany.
Mooney earned a strong victory in the 400 meters, finishing in 1:00.9. She also dominated in the high jump, soaring to 5 feet, 7 inches -- topping the next best jumper by nine inches.
Mooney was also a catalyst in two other placements. She was the opening leg on the runner-up 4x100 relay with her sister, Helen, Stephanie Saddlemire and Lila Nolan.
The sophomore Mooney also finished fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 33 feet, 1/2 inch.
Mooney qualified for the Section II meet in all three individual events.
Other place finishers in the top six were Saddlemire’s fifth in the 100 meter dash and Nolan’s fourth in the 800 meters.
Maple Hill swept both the girls and boys meets. The Wildcat girls edged Middleburgh 125.5 to 120, while the boys topped Rensselaer-Doane Stuart, 122-97.
The Cambridge boys missed out on placement, but Durgin McCue came home with a pair of seventh-place finishes, including in the 800. He ran a 2:13.98 -- three-hundredeths of a second out of a point-scoring position.
Locals compete at Vermont City Marathon
BURLINGTON -- About a dozen runners from the local area competed on Sunday at the Vermont City Marathon.
The top local finisher was Cambridge, N.Y.’s Jessica Bashaw, the 17th female to finish in a time of 3 hours, 9 minutes and 18 seconds.
Manchester’s Nick Gault was the next fastest local, completing 26.2 miles in 3:13:36, good for 130th in the men’s race.
Other competitors included Bennington residents Jessica Chapman (3:38:30), William Colvin (4:05:31) and Andrea Malinowski (5:52:03).
Manchester teens Liam Kelleher and Thomas Kittross each finished in under four hours, Kelleher in 3:30:43 and Kittross in 3:44:54. Kenneth Kunisch also beat the four-hour mark, doing it in 3:59:34. Gail Schnaars finished as well in 4:35:46.
Also from Manchester, Eric Rose was 12th in the men’s handcycle race, finishing in 2:15:50.
