BENNINGTON -- The first time the Mount Anthony Union High School and Springfield softball teams met, the Patriots eked out a 6-5 decision over the Cosmos.
On Monday, the Patriots made sure the second time didn’t match the first, trashing the Cosmos 13-1.
Kate Goodell led the way at the plate, going 5-5 with a triple, four singles and three RBIs. Kori Bow was also perfect at the dish, going 4-4 with four singles.
Makayla Farrara went 2-4, driving in three runs.
Jenna Crowley picked up the win, going the distance while striking out nine and walking four on two hits and one unearned run.
MAU scored eight runs in the first to blow open the game.
Springfield scored its lone run on an error in the sixth. Sarah Locke took the loss.
MAU is now 9-0 heading into a crunch showdown with Massachusetts school Pittsfield on Wednesday at home.
Patriot boys win
BRATTLEBORO -- The Mount Anthony Union High School boys tennis team inched closer to a bid in the postseason, topping Brattleboro 6-1 on Monday.
The Patriots won all six contested matches, forfeiting at fifth singles.
Blake Greenawalt, Hao Guo and Flavio Iudica all won in two sets in singles action, while Brian Murphy had to go three sets to pull out a 6-0, 4-6, 10-4 win.
In doubles, Ben Michon and Austin Ulrich won 7-6, 7-6, winning the tiebreakers 7-3 and 7-5 to secure the two-set win.
The Patriots are no 4-5 on the year and return to action on Wednesday at home against Bellows Falls.
Bazyk powers Bulldogs
SAXTONS RIVER -- Playing in a non-league contest on Monday, the Burr and Burton Academy girls lacrosse team topped Vermont Academy 19-4 on the road.
Morgan Bazyk powered the Bulldogs with six goals in the win, while Hayley Sabol added four and Aggie Bisselle, Katy Jones and Cat Greenberg all had two goals. Casey Apps had four assists and one goal in the win.
Lauren Mackenzie had a quiet day in the cage, making only two saves.
BBA is now 7-2 on the year and return to action on Thursday at home against Rutland.
Patriots smash Generals
PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Traveling down to Massachusetts on Monday, the Mount Anthony Union High School girls lacrosse team returned hom with a 17-3 win over Pittsfield.
Emily Cross had three goals and an assist for MAU, while Emily Altland had two goals and three assists to lead the Patriots.
Anne Peck, Erica Hale and Meghan Bishop all had two goals for MAU.
In the cage, Sam Mayer had three stops and Leah Olansky had two as the pair split time for MAU.
The Patriots are now 6-3 and return to action on Wednesday at home against Hartford.
BBA girls tennis tops
RUTLAND -- No one has beaten the Burr and Burton Academy girls tennis team this season, and the Bulldogs moved to 10-0 on the year with a 6-1 win over Rutland on Monday.
Maddy Pagnucco, Irene Matas, Gabby Vella and Stella Oh all won their singles matches, while Jordan Harmon turned in the match of the afternoon at second singles, winning 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles, Eliza Breed and Silvia Velasco fell at first doubles while Julia Campanella and Haley McGrath won at second doubles.
BBA returns to action on Thursday at home against MAU.
Hoosick baseball downed
STILLWATER, N.Y. -- After a walk-off win over the weekend, the Hoosick Falls Central School baseball team returned to action on Monday as the Panthers fell to Stillwater 11-3.
Wyatt Whitman led the Panthers at the plate, hitting a double for Hoosick. Alex LaBarge, Garrett Wright and Shane Richards all scored runs for Hoosick Falls.
Kealan Hitt took the loss.
Stillwater did most of its damage in the third, scoring five runs to blow open a 2-1 contest.
Hoosick Falls is now 8-7 overall and 6-6 in the Wasaren League. The team returns to action today at Greenwich.
Patriots girls tennis wins
BENNINGTON -- The Mount Anthony Union High School girls tennis team defeated Brattleboro 5-2 on Monday at the Rec Center.
Jessie Kuzmicki, Keara Sternberg, Margaret Curtin and Grace Page all picked up wins in singles action, while Erica Frost fell at third singles.
In doubles play, Nicole Monick and Taylor Tobin fell 7-5, 6-4 and in the match of the day, Samantha Green and Julia Parks won 6-1, 3-6, 10-8.
MAU is now 5-4 on the year, the team returns to action today against Rutland at home.
Minutemen edge Bulldogs
CLARENDON -- In a pitcher’s duel on Monday, the Mill River baseball team edged out Burr and Burton Academy 2-0.
Ryan Darling got the win on the mound for Mill River, pitching six innings while striking out six. Noah Rizio took the loss, going all seven innings while striking out eight and giving up seven hits.
At the plate, Dan Blanchard won the game for Mill River in the third, hitting a one out, two-run double.
In the seventh, BBA threatened when Rizio got on with a double then advanced to third on an error, putting runners on the corners with no outs. But Mill River brought in ace pitcher Nate Pritchard to close, and Pritchard delivered with three-straight strikeouts to end it.
BBA falls to 3-6 and returns to action on Wednesday at Otter Valley.
Panthers fall to Stillwater
STILLWATER, N.Y. -- Despite getting three RBIs from Chelsea Stevens, the Hoosick Falls Central School softball team fell to Stillwater 6-4 on Monday.
Maddy Ryan added the other run for Hoosick Falls, while Stevens finished the day 3-4 at the plate.
Stillwater was led by Tessa Fox-Kondas and Morgan Beaulieu, who each had two RBIs in the win.
Alyssa Ellis took the loss, going six innings while giving up eight hits and three walks and striking out one.
Taylor Moore got the win, going seven innings while giving up six hits, walking two and striking out 10.
Hoosick Falls falls to 5-11 on the year and 5-6 in the Wasaren League. The Panthers return to action today at Cambridge.
