CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- With the New England Collegiate Conference men’s volleyball tournament around the corner, the Southern Vermont College men traveled to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Friday night to take part in the MIT Scramble.

Unfortunately for the Mountaineers, though, day one of the event ended with back-to-back 3-0 losses.

In game one, SVC fell to Elmira, the No. 10 team in the nation, 25-22, 25-16 and 25-18.

Senior Anthony Barahona recorded 11 kills to lead the Mountaineers, while junior Scott Fitzgerald added eight kills and seven digs. Senior Anthony Ayala set up 26 of the 29 Mountaineer kills and junior Florentino Escovedo had a team-best 14 digs.

In game two, SVC fell to Hunter College 25-21, 25-21, 25-18.

Barahona once again led SVC in kills, tallying 14 in the contest. Junior Keven Walley added six kills and four digs. Escovedo had eight digs in the second match.

SVC falls to 12-11 after the pair of losses.

SVC returns to action on Saturday with two more contests, playing host MIT and Bard College.

D-III tennis in town

BENNINGTON -- With a colder-than-usual spring, some of the best Division III tennis teams in the area will play weekend matches at the Bennington Tennis Center.

On Sunday the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts will host Castleton State College in men’s action starting at 1 p.m.

MCLA is coached by Bennington resident Trevor Grimshaw.

The event is open to the public and are free of charge.

Originally, Williams College was to play Tufts on Saturday at the Bennington Tennis Center, but Williams decided on Friday to hold the contest on its own outdoor courts.

Storm football tryouts

BENNINGTON -- The Southern Vermont Storm football team will be hosting open tryouts will be on April 15 at the Veterans Home practice field, located at 325 North Street in Bennington.

Masters swim meet

BENNINGTON -- The 3rd annual Monumental Masters Mini Meet will be held on Saturday, April 26 at the Bennington Recreation Center on Gage Street.

Adults over the age of 18 are encouraged to swim, no prior competition is required.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Bennington Marauders swim team.

Warm-ups start at 9 a.m., with the first event beginning at 10 a.m.

Pre-registration is $15 per swimmer by April 22, or $20 the day of the event. Forms are available at the Rec Center, or email mike@usms.org for more information.

Bennington Road Race

BENNINGTON -- The 26th annual Steve Zemianek Bennington Road Race will be held on Sunday, May 4 beginning at the Park McCullough house in North Bennington.

This year’s event is dedicated to the memory of local educator and marathon runner Gail Harwood. The race is produced and directed by the Batten Kill Valley Runners.

All net proceeds will be donated to the Mount Anthony Union High School Zemianek scholarship fund.

The kids race will begin at 9:30 a.m., and the 3.8K and 10K races will start at 10 a.m.

Registration is $15 in advance and $20 after May 1.

Runners can register online at runreg.com. Paper registration is available at Wills Insurance, Bennington Recreation Center, Off the Wall, Anytime Fitness, Bennington Sports Center and all schools in Bennington and North Bennington.

Bennington Basketball School

BENNINGTON -- Applications are now being accepted for the Bennington Basketball School for Boys. The camp runs from July 7 to July 11. Players aged 12-15 will practice from 8 a.m. to noon, and 7-11 will practice from 1 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.
