NASHUA, N.H. -- The Southern Vermont College men’s volleyball team picked up a key win on Monday night, topping Daniel Webster College 3-2 in a New England Collegiate Conference contest.
The win pushes SVC to 10-7 on the year and 6-2 in the NECC, tying them for second place with Daniel Webster (9-12, 6-2).
SVC won the first set 25-23 before dropping the next two 25-20. But in the fourth set SVC turned things around for a 28-26 win, and then the Mountaineers cruised in the deciding fifth game 15-2.
Anthony Barahona led the Mountaineers with 24 kills in the contest while also chipping in with 13 digs. Keven Walley added 14 kills for SVC while Scott Fitzgerald had six kills and 16 digs. Libero Florentino Escovedo led the team with 26 digs on the night.
Daniel Webster was led by Joe Walz, who recorded 24 kills and 22 digs. Ryan Howdeshell added 12 kills and 20 digs for Daniel Webster.
SVC returns to action on Thursday for another critical NECC tilt, as the Mountaineers look to knock off top dogs Endicott on the road. SVC beat Endicott at the Mountaineer Athletic Center earlier this season.
Bennington Road Race
BENNINGTON -- The 36th annual Steve Zemianek Bennington Road Race will be held on Sunday, May 4 beginning at the Park McCullough house in North Bennington.
The event this year is being dedicated to the memory of local educator and marathon runner Gail Harwood.
As in past years, all net proceeds will be donated to the Mount Anthony Union High School Zemianek scholarship fund.
Races start at 9:30 a.m. with the kids race. The 3.8K and 10K races will be run simultaneously beginning at 10 a.m.
Registration is $15 in advance and $20 after May 1. A t-shirt will be given to the first 200 registrants of the 3.8K and 10K races.
Runners can register online at runreg.com. Paper registration forms are available at Wills Insurance, Bennington Recreation Center, Off the Wall, Anytime Fitness, Shaftsbury Country Store, Bennington Sports Center and all schools in Bennington and North Bennington.
