MIDDLEBURY -- The Mount Anthony Union High School cross-country ski teams remain in contention after Day 1 of the state meet at Rikert Touring Center.
The boys are second in Division I, 12 points behind Champlain Valley Union after the individual race and the relay.
Individually in D-I, Luke Keenan was second, Will Buckley was fourth, Andy Barlow ninth and Nick Altland was 16th. In the relay, those four skiers were 8 seconds behind the winning Redhawks.
In Division II, BBA was sixth in the relay with Andres Proft, Thomas Kittross, Simon Aborn, and Scott Mooney.
For the girls, Mount Anthony is third behind Champlain Valley and Mount Mansfield. The Patriots are 29 points ahead of Burlington in fourth.
Abby Malmborg was 13th to lead MAU individually, with Allie Boudreau close behind. Those two, along with Molly O'Callaghan and Erica Hale, were third in the relay.
In Division II, BBA was sixth in the relay with Helena Bigelow, Ali Leiter, Amanda Mulroy and Raili Utiger.
Eagles top Black River
LUDLOW -- Austin Hawley scored 30 points, all in the second half, to lead the Arlington Eagles to a 82-68 win over Black River on Thursday night in boys basketball action.
Nineteen of Hawley's points came in the fourth quarter -- all the points the Eagles scored in the final frame.
DJ Jennings added 23, including 17 in the first half and Nathan Mattison had one of his best games of the year statistically with 19 points.
For Black River, Joe Noble had 22 to lead the Presidents.
Arlington hosts West Rutland tonight at 7:30 p.m.
VPA sets ticket prices for tournament games
BENNINGTON -- The Vermont Principals Association sets the ticket prices for basketball tournament games. The admission price for the first two rounds is $5 for adults and $4 for students and senior citizens.
When the semifinal and finals are at UVM or Barre Auditorium, the prices increase to $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors.
Pownal youth baseball
POWNAL -- The Pownal Cal Ripken Baseball is looking for players for the upcoming season. The team is open to all Pownal and surrounding area children ages 4-12. Children ages 9-12 can play in Cal Ripken sanctioned tournaments.
There is no registration fee for any child. Sign-ups will be Feb. 24 and 26 from 5:15 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Pownal Elementary School gym.

BENNINGTON -- Mt. Anthony Lacrosse Association will hold 2014 spring registration on February 25 and 26 at the Bennington Rec Center from 6 to 7:30 p.m. for boys and girls grades K thru 8.

The season starts April 1.

Benn LL sign-ups
BENNINGTON -- The Bennington Little League is opening registration for the 2014 season. Registration for the season is Feb. 19 and 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Fire House on River Street.
All players 5-12 in the Bennington school district looking to play baseball this year need to register on one of these four dates.

Mack Attack sign-ups
ARLINGTON -- The Mack Attack AAU girls' basketball season will begin practicing on March 9, and sign-ups are ongoing.
