ARLINGTON -- It was a double dose of Raiche trouble for the Arlington Memorial High School girls basketball team on Saturday, as the Eagles fell to West Rutland 64-43 at home.

Twin sisters Morgan and Taylor Raiche combined to haul down 32 rebounds, including 13 on the offensive end, to give the Golden Horde an advantage on the glass that the Eagles could not match.

"[West Rutland] is pretty aggressive. They know us and we know them," said Arlington coach Larry Andrews. "They are a lot more aggressive than we are, they go to the boards with reckless abandon."

As a team, West Rutland pulled down a staggering 54 rebounds as a team, with 27 coming on the offensive glass, compared to Arlington's 24.

"That is what we have focused on the last couple of days: Rebounding," West Rutland coach Carl Serrani said. "We are usually a bigger team...but we have been getting outrebounded so we have focused on that."

The rebounding advantage would not be apparent at first, though, as Arlington stayed close with West Rutland for a majority of the first quarter.

The teams would split the first 18 points of the game, with West Rutland taking the lead three times in the early going while Arlington got the lead once.

Jenn Sumner would hit a three for West Rutland to make it 5-2 early, but Molly Elwell (9 points) countered with a three of her own to tie things up.

A basket by the third Raiche, Brooke, would make it 7-5 Golden Horde, but an offensive putback by Avery Bucchieri (9 points) would tie things up then Julia Lacoste (17 points) stole the ball and took it the distance to give Arlington a 9-7 lead.

The lead would be Arlington's only of the contest.

On the next possession Taylor Raiche would finish off a pass from Sumner to tie the game up and spark a 13-0 run for the Golden Horde to end the first up 20-9.

"We had it at 9-9 early, but they kept coming at us and wore us down," Andrews said. "We have a short bench and a really young team. We don't have quite the experience that they have."

In the second Arlington would outscore West Rutland 16-14, but it still left the Eagles in a 34-25 hole at the break.

Arlington cut the deficit to seven in the second on a pair of free throws from Lacoste to make it 27-20, but threes by Brooke and Morgan Raiche pushed the lead back to double digits.

After halftime, West Rutland would put its foot on the gas to take a 50-34 lead going into the fourth.

Over the final frame, the Horde kept pushing the Eagles with its press defense to balloon the lead out to its 64-43 final.

Morgan Raiche finished with eight points and 19 rebounds, while Taylor Raiche added 11 points and 13 rebounds.

"They have a big inside presence and they work well together," Serrani said of the duo.

Lacoste had nine rebounds, three steals and two assists to lead Arlington, while Bucchieri added four rebounds and Brooke Hawley added four points, four rebounds and a steal. Mikayla Dambrackas led West Rutland with 15 points

Arlington falls to 7-8 with the loss, while West Rutland improves to 13-3. Arlington returns to action on Tuesday, at home against Leland & Grey.
