HOOSICK, N.Y. -- The Hoosick Falls Central School girls basketball team overcame a 16-12 first quarter deficit to top Greenwich 55-48 at home on Wednesday.

The Panthers buckled down on defense in the second quarter, outscoring the Witches 13-6 to take the lead at 28-22 going into halftime.

Megan Flynn paced the Panthers in the game, posting 18 points and 12 rebounds. Ashley St. Onge scored 10 in the winning effort, including going 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in the final minute of the game to ice the win. Rachel Pine also had 10 for the Patriots.

Mariah Linnett had 24 for the Witches in the loss, while Alexis Case had nine points.

Patriots pound Cosmos

SPRINGFIELD -- The Mount Anthony Union High School boys basketball team rebounded from a loss to Rice over the weekend, beating Springfield 73-34 on Wednesday.

Alec Little led the Patriots with 11 points in the win. The Patriots were up only 12-9 after the first, but outscored the Cosmos 21-7 in the second and 23-10 in the third to put the game out of reach.

Benjamin Gelheiser scored nine points for the Patriots, Sean Brundage chipped in with eight, and Ethan Anderson and Damon Burgess each had seven for MAU. Justin Burgess was a monster on the glass, hauling in 12 rebounds to go with his four points.

MAU is now 1-1.

Bulldogs win big

WOODSTOCK -- The Burr and Burton Academy girls hockey team went on the road to Woodstock and won 8-3 on Wednesday night.

Molly Dingley, Natalia Sowulewska, Rachel Tegen and Audriauna Bryant all scored their first varsity goals to help the lead the Bulldogs in the win, while Emma Weinstein recorded six saves in net for the Bulldogs.

Rachel Surrel had two goals to lead Woodstock, while Stephanie Hendrick had 25 saves in net.

BBA moves to 4-1 with the win, and will play Middlebury on Saturday at Riley Rink.

Hoop shoot contest

BENNINGTON -- The Bennington Elks Lodge will be holding its annual hoop shoot contest on Sunday, December 29. The event will take place at the Mount Anthony Union High School gymnasium.

Registration starts at 12:30 p.m., and the competition will start at 1.

The contest is for boys and girls ages 8-13, with their age being determined by how old they are on April 1, 2014. A birth certificate is required at registration.

MAU youth wrestling

BENNINGTON -- Mount Anthony youth wrestling sign-ups will be held in the high school cafeteria on Tuesday, Dec. 17 and Friday, Dec. 20 from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Both sign-ups are prior to MAU wrestling matches.

Registration is $40 per wrestler with fundraiser, or $65 without fundraiser, and $30 for each additional family member.
