PENFIELD, N.Y. -- The Mount Anthony Union High School wrestling team opened the season with a win at the Hunter Penfield Holiday Tournament in New York.
The Patriots wrestled against teams from the Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, and Binghamton regions, with 12 other teams competing against MAU.
The Patriots tallied up 289 points to win the meet by a comfortable margin, with hosts Penfield finishing in second with 207.5 points. Lancaster was third with 146.5 points.
Troy Gassaway (120-pounds), Damon Young (170), Austin Price (182), Tyler Mattison (195), Jack Luciano (220) and Jesse Webb (285) all took home first-place finishes at the meet, with Mattison taking home the Upper Weights Outstanding Wrestler award.
"We had dominating performances by Troy, Damon and Tyler," coach Scott Legacy said.
Tyler Raetz (113) and Dylan LaFountain (132) finished in second in their respective weight classes.
Ashdin Schaefer (99), Calvin Call (106), Taber Watson (120) and Bailey Willard (138) finished third by winning their consolation finals.
"Our kids who lost early battled back to take third place," Legacy said. "While Dylan LaFountain and Tyler Raetz had big semi-final wins."
Vince Pagan (152) and Justin Morse (126) each finished in sixth at the meet.
"For only having two weeks of practice, and the New York teams having a month jump on us and about 6-7 matches under their belts, I was extremely pleased with our effort," Legacy said.
"It is a great start to the season, but we have two gigantic home matches this week with Massachusetts State champions Springfield Central on Tuesday and Maine powerhouse Noble on Friday."
