BENNINGTON -- U.S. Ski Team member Andy Newell and the Bank of Bennington are sponsoring an Olympic Day this Sunday, June 23, at lower Willow Park from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Newell, a Shaftsbury native, will be on hand to help kids ages 15 and under experience participating six Olympic events. Participants will also have the opportunity to make their own Olympic medal and receive an autographed photo from Newell, who has competed in the two prior winter games.

On Sunday, International Olympic Day, Communities around the world will be celebrating the spirit of good sportsmanship and international understanding that the Olympics embody. The 2014 winter Olympic games will be held in Sochi, Russia, in February.

Hoosier Basketball Camp

HOOSICK, N.Y. -- The Hoosier Basketball Camp will again be sponsored by the Town of Hoosick for boys and girls entering grades 3 through 8. The camp runs daily from June 24 to 27, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Go the Distance Run this Saturday

BENNINGTON -- Registration is now open for Go the Distance, a 5k Family Fun-Run/Walk sponsored by the Batten Kill Valley Runners to benefit the peer Support Program at United Counseling Service.

This year's race will be held on Saturday at 9 a.m. with the start and finish at 316 Dewey St. in Bennington.

Go the Distance is for people of all ages and abilities.

Advance registration includes a free Go the Distance T-shirt, with a discount for BKVR club members. Registration at the start opens at 8 a.m. for $20 with T-shirts available for first come, first served. Get a family discount registration for only $10 per person.

World class soccer school starts in July

SHAFTSBURY -- The World Class Soccer School returns to Shaftsbury for another summer, running July 8-12 at Howard Park.

The week-long camp, run by former MAU soccer star and current University of South Carolina head coach Shelley (Addison) Smith, teaches players ages 5-12 about the fundamentals of the game, working closely with their coach and camp directors.

At the end of the week, there is a World Cup parade and tournament play throughout the day.

Smith, the 2011 Southeastern Conference coach of the year, has led her team to five straight NCAA appearances and two SEC titles.

'Good Old Country Hardball' baseball camp

HOOSICK, N.Y. -- The "Good Old Country Hardball" baseball camp will once again be held at the Hoosick Little League Fields for children entering grades 3 through 8. The camp dates are July 15 through July 18. Camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. MAU Golf Scramble

BENNINGTON -- The MAU golf team's scramble will be held at Mount Anthony Country Club on June 30, with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Teams of four or individuals are welcome. $75 per person includes green fees, cart, BBQ and many prizes. Benn Basketball School

Lady Patriot b-ball camp

BENNINGTON -- The Lady Patriot basketball camp is running from June 24-28 at Mount Anthony for players ages 8 to 16.

The camp will be based on teaching individual and team skills and concepts through drills and games.

The cost for the camp is $110 for one child or $90 for more than one.

Arlington soccer camp

ARLINGTON -- The 36th annual John Werner soccer camp will take place from July 22-26 for players from first to seventh grade.

The camp goes from 9 a.m. to noon every day at the Fisher Elementary School fields.

Camp stuff includes Werner, the winningest boys soccer coach in Vermont history. Current Arlington coaches Mike Keough and Todd Wilkins, along with Arlington players will also attend.

The cost is $90 per child and $60 for each additional child. Each player is to bring a ball, shin guards and a water bottle every day.

Soccer balls can be ordered for $15 with a registration.

There is also a senior camp for players in seventh to 12th grade from July 8-11. The camp runs from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Fisher Elementary School.

MALA camp returns

BENNINGTON -- The Southern Vermont Youth Lacrosse Camp returns to Willow Park in Bennington from July 15-18 for boys ages 5-16.

Players from ages 5-8 (cost $75) attend a half day session from 9 to 11 a.m.

Players from ages 9-16 (cost $150) attend a full day session from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Equipment is available.
