LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP

CRAFTSBURY -- The Mount Anthony Union High School boys Nordic ski team sits in second and the girls third after the freestyle portion of the two-leg Vermont state championships on Thursday at Craftsbury Commons.

Champlain Valley sits atop both the boys and girls standings in Division I, leading MAU 28-61 on the boys side. The CVU girls (30) also have a solid cushion on Mount Mansfield (62) and the Patriots (88).

"We basically skied to our seeds today," MAU coach Bruce Smith said.

Luke Keenan took third overall in the individual race behind CVU’s Forrest Hamilton and Rutland’s Isaac Wright. Caleb Cohen took 11th for the Patriots, followed by Luke Johnas (12th) and Jeremiah Colbath (15th).

The Patriots’ relay was second to the Redhawks by just 19 seconds.

"That was a stellar day [for Keenan]. Other coaches were commenting on how he was skiing with incredible intensity," Smith said.

In ninth place, Becca Romac led the MAU girls in the individual race. Erin Anderson took 10th, Abby Malmborg 17th and Lauren Driscoll 27th.

The Patriots were third in the relay behind the Redhawks and Cougars after Romac started with a blistering first leg.

"She skied a phenomenal opening leg for us," Smith said.

The action concludes on Tuesday at Prospect Mountain for the Classic races beginning at 10:30 a.m.
