MECHANICVILLE, N.Y. -- Hoosick Falls Central School avenged last year’s sectional championship loss to Mechanicville with a 46-36 upset of the sixth-seeded Red Raiders in the Class C opening round playoff game Tuesday night.
No. 11 Hoosick Falls (10-9) sank nine free throws in the fourth quarter to cement a game that got as close as five down the stretch.
"The kids played hard, played with a lot of intensity," said Hoosick coach Mike Lilac. "It’s as sweet a win as we’ve had in a while."
The Panthers used a 12-2 fourth quarter to surge ahead of the Red Raiders (9-10). Taylor Baker led the way with 10 points. Austin Pitt added nine and Levi Brewster eight.
Hoosick faces No. 3 Greenwich at 5 p.m. on Friday at Hudson Valley Community College.
Rutland knocks Patriots
RUTLAND -- Rutland broke free from a three-point game at halftime with by outscoring Mount Anthony Union High School 20-7 in the third quarter en route to a 57-37 win on Tuesday night.
The Raiders (15-4), without a loss since Jan. 5, took a 43-27 lead into the fourth quarter. The Raiders were led by 14 points from Patrick O’Rourke.
"We never got ourselves back into it," MAU coach Dan Sleeman said. "They wore us down at the end."
Aaryngston Bibens paced the Patriots (6-13) with 13 points and seven rebounds while Evan Sparta added eight points and six boards. MAU travels to Brattleboro for the regular-season finale on Friday night.
Bulldogs blast Slaters
FAIR HAVEN -- Joey Shehadi struck for 21 points as the Burr and Burton Academy boys basketball team raced past Fair Haven, 59-38, on Tuesday night.
Weston Muench recorded 15 points and Jake Stalcup 10 for the Bulldogs (17-2), who close out the season at Mount St. Joseph on Friday night.
BBA led 31-16 at halftime. Fair Haven (10-9) was led by nine points from Andrew Reid.
Otters edge Eagles
BRANDON -- Ryan Kelly and John Winslow combined for 29 points for Otter Valley in a 56-53 win against Arlington in boys basketball on Tuesday night.
Olden Dwyer led the Eagles (10-8) with 17 points. Alex Hawley chipped in with 14 and DJ Jennings had nine.
Arlington hosts Black River tonight at 6 p.m.
Bennington Little League registration
BENNINGTON -- Registration for the 2013 season will begin on Feb. 20 and 21 at the Firehouse on River Street from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Registration concludes on Feb. 27 and 28 again at the same time and place.
All players ages 5-12 in the Bennington area, including former Norshaft registrants, looking to play baseball this year need to register on one of these four dates. For all registrants a photocopy of the birth certificate is required.

Lax officials training
BENNINGTON -- The Vermont Lacrosse Officials Association will be offering training clinics throughout the state for individuals interested in officiating boys lacrosse.
The clinics will include 2 man mechanics, technical and personal fouls, field mechanics, proper signaling, verbal and visual communication, penalty enforcement and pre and post game preparation. The clinics are free and pre-registration is required.
The Southern Vermont clinic will be held on March 17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mount Anthony Union High School in Bennington.

Zemianek road race returns May 5
BENNINGTON -- The 35th annual Steve Zemianek Road Race will take place on May 5 at the Park-McCullough House in North Bennington.
There are three different runs, a 3.8-mile course, a 10K course and a half-mile fun run for children.
The entry fee is $15 to pre-register and $3 for the fun run. A family of four can register at a reduced rate of $40.
Awards will be given to the top male and female runner and the top three in each age group.
