WOODSTOCK -- The Mount Anthony Union High School Nordic ski teams swept the Marble Valley League championships with victories in Monday’s freestyle relays at Woodstock.
The boys team of Luke Keenan, Caleb Cohen, Will Buckley and Luke Johnas finished in 13 minutes, 7 seconds, out-skiing Woodstock by 15 seconds. Brattleboro was third, a minute behind and Rutland was fourth.
Overall MAU scored a 50, beating the Wasps’ 92, Brattleboro’s 133, Rutland’s 169 and Burr and Burton Academy’s 235.
The girls race was closer with the Wasps, but a strong performance clinched the win for MAU. The team of Becca Romac, Lauren Driscoll, Abby Malmborg and Erin Anderson led from the start, skiing the 1.25-kilometer course in 14:41 and beating Woodstock by 20 seconds. In the team score, MAU won with 46, while Woodstock had 64 and Rutland 144.
"Whoever skied better would be MVL champions and we were focused, fast and skied really well," said MAU coach Bruce Smith.
Freestyle states are Thursday at Craftsbury, then the state championship finishes on February 26 at Prospect Mountain in Woodford, weather permitting.
BBA falls to Raiders
RUTLAND -- Claudia Mosher scored a season-high 17 points for the Burr and Burton Academy girls basketball team, but the Bulldogs fell to Rutland, 53-46.
Maresa Bowen and Kristen Switzer matched Mosher’s 17 for Rutland (9-8).
Deidre Walsh pitched in eight for BBA, who drops to 7-9.
Eagles’ streak snapped
PROCTOR -- The Arlington Memorial High School girls basketball team had their winning streak stopped at seven after a 55-53 loss to Proctor on Monday night.
Down 44-30 at the end of three quarters, Arlington (8-6) made a fierce comeback, but it came up just short before the final buzzer.
Julia Lacoste led the Eagles with 20, while senior Rayleen Sherman added 14. For Proctor (14-2), Carissa Elrick scored 20 and Jordan Mitchell had 18.
The teams will rematch on Wednesday for Senior Night at Arlington.
Bennington Little League registration
BENNINGTON -- Registration for the 2013 season will begin on Feb. 20 and 21 at the Firehouse on River Street from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Registration concludes on Feb. 27 and 28 again at the same time and place.
All players ages 5-12 in the Bennington area, including former Norshaft registrants, looking to play baseball this year need to register on one of these four dates. For all registrants a photocopy of the birth certificate is required.

BENNINGTON -- The Bennington Young Women’s Softball League is hosting their annual sign-ups. All girls ages 7-12 as of January 1 are encouraged to sign up.

Lax officials training
BENNINGTON -- The Vermont Lacrosse Officials Association will be offering training clinics throughout the state for individuals interested in officiating boys lacrosse.
The clinics will include 2 man mechanics, technical and personal fouls, field mechanics, proper signaling, verbal and visual communication, penalty enforcement and pre and post game preparation. The clinics are free and pre-registration is required.
The Southern Vermont clinic will be held on March 17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mount Anthony Union High School in Bennington.

Zemianek road race returns May 5
BENNINGTON -- The 35th annual Steve Zemianek Road Race will take place on May 5 at the Park-McCullough House in North Bennington.
There are three different runs, a 3.8-mile course, a 10K course and a half-mile fun run for children.
The entry fee is $15 to pre-register and $3 for the fun run. A family of four can register at a reduced rate of $40.
Awards will be given to the top male and female runner and the top three in each age group.
