RUTLAND -- Mount St. Joseph Academy chased down Mount Anthony Union High School midway through the fourth quarter only to see the Patriots pull away again for a 60-50 win in boys basketball on Tuesday night.

The Patriots won for the fourth time in the last six games to improve to 4-11 on the season.

Aaryngston Bibens led MAU with 23 points and 15 rebounds while Evan Sparta added 12 points and eight boards.

MAU led 47-36 at the start of the fourth quarter before an 11-0 MSJ (11-4) run knotted the game 47-47. Sean Brundage (nine points) and the Mounties' Jahnathan Mitchell (22 points) traded 3s to tie things again, but the Patriots closed on a 10-0 run to seal the result.

Slaters trip up BBA

FAIR HAVEN -- A strong third quarter powered Fair Haven past Burr and Burton Academy, 44-28, in girls basketball on Tuesday night.

The Slaters (12-2) outpaced the Bulldogs (7-6) 18-8 in the third to break open a game they led 16-10 at halftime.

Bethany Lanfear scored a game-high 19 points for Fair Haven. Olson Humphrey led seven BBA scorers with eight points.

Forts eke past Hoosick

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- The Hoosick Falls Central School bowling team was edged out at the Adirondack League championships by Fort Edward on Tuesday afternoon.

In a matchup between the Northern and Southern Division champions, Fort Edward beat out Hoosick Falls by 18 total pins, 3,729 to 3,711.

It was the first time in four league championship matches that the Forts have come out on top.

Top bowlers for Hoosick Falls were Bryan Callahan with a 245 high game and 701 three-game series; Ken Marbot 231-652, Josh McCart 237-636 and Logan Brogue 247-635.

For Fort Edward, Brad Delisle led all scorers with a 263-710 series.

Pearson fuels Panthers

HOOSICK, N.Y. -- Frankie Pearson sprang for a season-high 26 points Tuesday night as Hoosick Falls Central School blew past Stillwater, 59-38, in Wasaren League girls basketball.

The Panthers (11-5 overall, 9-4 league) trailed 15-8 after the first quarter but outscored the Warriors 43-12 over the next two to charge ahead.

Carsen Williams added 13 points and Rachel Pine 11 for Hoosick Falls, while Liz Zehner led Stillwater (6-10, 5-8) with 11 points.

Valley rocks Cambridge

CAMBRIDGE, N.Y. -- Hoosic Valley used a pair of lopsided quarters to rout Cambridge Central School, 54-11, in Wasaren League girls basketball on Tuesday night.

Valley (14-3 overall, 12-1 league)), ranked No. 2 in the state in Class C, outscored Cambridge 19-2 in the first quarter and 26-1 in the third to win convincingly.

Cassidy Chapko led all scorers with 20 points for Hoosic Valley. Sarah Cuddihy led Cambridge (2-14, 1-12) with eight points.

Wildcats drop SVC

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Bay Path had three players in double figures as they snuck past Southern Vermont College, 59-53, in women's basketball on Tuesday night.

Katherine Chabot led with 15 points for the Wildcats, while Kayla Skiffington and Justine Hook each added 10.

For SVC (3-18), Amber Flagg top the scoring with 18 points, while Sarah McDonald added 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Elms tops Mountaineers

CHICOPEE, Mass. -- The Southern Vermont College men's basketball team fell in New England Collegiate Conference action Tuesday night, 92-67, at Elms College.

The Blazers, who defeated SVC 64-62 on Dec. 4, recorded 41 points off Mountaineer turnovers. Elms senior guard Andre French led all players with a season-high 27 points while Southern Vermont senior captain Taeshon Johnson notched a team-high 22 in the effort

Johnson also had a double-double with a game-high 12 rebounds.

Mount Anthony alum Travis Severs also added 16 points for SVC (1-21 overall, 1-12 NECC), which hosts Becker College for Senior Night on Thursday at 6 p.m. Elms improves to 14-8 overall, 12-1 in conference with the win.

MAU Youth Nights set

BENNINGTON -- The Mount Anthony Union High School Athletic Department is once again sponsoring a pair of youth basketball nights for the boys and girls area youth basketball players.

The boys night will be on Tuesday, Feb. 12, when the Patriot JV and varsity boys basketball teams host Hoosick Falls with JV starting at 6 p.m. All boys playing MAYAA Basketball will be admitted free of charge by wearing their game jerseys.

The girls night will be Friday, Feb. 15, when the MAU JV and varsity girls basketball teams will host Rutland. JV action starts at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity. All girls playing MAYAA Basketball will be admitted free of charge by wearing their game jerseys.

At the halftime of each junior varsity game there will be a 10-minute exhibition game featuring MAYAA teams and a drawing for a basketball signed by the varsity team will be held after the exhibition game.

Pownal Cal Ripken

POWNAL -- Sign-up for the Pownal Cal Ripken baseball league will take place starting Wednesday and will also run Feb. 11 and 13 at the Pownal Elementary School from 5 to 6:15 p.m.

The league is open to all Pownal and surrounding area children ages 4 to 12. Children 9 and up can play in Cal Ripken sanctioned tournaments.

BYSL hosts sign up

BENNINGTON -- The Bennington Young Women's Softball League is hosting their annual sign-ups. All girls ages 7-12 as of January 1 are encouraged to sign up.

Returning player sign-ups will be held Feb. 12, at the Bennington Fire House on River Street from 6 to 7 p.m. New player sign-ups will be held Feb. 26 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

All first-year players should bring a copy of their birth certificate. Registration fee is $35 for 1 child, $50 for 2 children/family, and $70 for 3 or more.

Lax officials training

BENNINGTON -- The Vermont Lacrosse Officials Association will be offering training clinics throughout the state for individuals interested in officiating boys lacrosse.

The clinics will include 2 man mechanics, technical and personal fouls, field mechanics, proper signaling, verbal and visual communication, penalty enforcement and pre and post game preparation. The clinics are free and pre-registration is required. The clinics will be held on the following days and locations:

Monument Soccer signups

BENNINGTON -- The Monument Soccer Club has sign-ups next week at the Bennington Sports Center.

Monument is a soccer club that participates in the Capital District Youth Soccer League in the spring and runs from April-June with a 10-game season.

Any interested boy or girl from U8-U18 can sign up.

Zemianek road race returns May 5

BENNINGTON -- The 35th annual Steve Zemianek Road Race will take place on May 5 at the Park-McCullough House in North Bennington.

There are three different runs, a 3.8-mile course, a 10K course and a half-mile fun run for children.

The entry fee is $15 to pre-register and $3 for the fun run. A family of four can register at a reduced rate of $40.

Awards will be given to the top male and female runner and the top three in each age group.
