BENNINGTON -- Southern Vermont College women's basketball freshman Amber Flagg was selected as the New England Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Week for the fourth time this season for the week ending Feb. 3.
The captain averaged 20.7 points, three rebounds and three steals in three games for the Mountaineers last week, including a 27-point performance in a loss to Elms. She also scored 22 against Becker College and 13 in a loss to league-leading Regis.
Flagg also earned the rookie award in her first week of games in November, the week of Dec. 17 and the week of Jan. 14.
In 13 conference games this season, the guard has averaged 17.8 points and shot 35.6 percent from the field. Overall, Flagg has scored 17.2 points per game, third in conference.
Also, SVC men's volleyball player Anthony Barahona was selected as the Player of the Week.
Barahona hit .225 over the weekend in four matches at the Golden Flyer Invitational held at Nazareth College.
The 6-foot-4 junior ranks first in the NECC with 64 kills, sports a .243 hitting percentage and a conference-leading 0.53 service aces per set.
BBA slips past ‘Canes
HARTFORD -- Tied at the half, the Burr and Burton Academy boys basketball team held Hartford to 18 second-half points in a 51-41 win on the road.
Joe Shehadi had 14 to lead the Bulldogs, who improve to 13-2 and remain third in the D-II standings. Josh Claflin scored 13 for the 8-8 Hurricanes.
Eagles clipped by ‘Cats
WILMINGTON -- A close game throughout, the Arlington Memorial High School boys basketball team came out on the short end of a 59-58 loss to Twin Valley.
Up by one at the half, the Wildcats (5-9) came back to take a 42-40 lead heading into the fourth.
Twin Valley's Colin Lozito led all scorers with 26. For Arlington (7-6), DJ Jennings had 21 points, while Alex Hawley added 14. Alex Trayah also pitched in 11 for the Eagles.
Indians fall to ALC
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Cambridge was blanked in the first quarter and held to 14 total points in a 61-14 loss to Albany Leadership Charter High.
McKenna Lee Gordon led ALC with 21 points. For Cambridge (2-12), Olivia Mooney and Sarah Cuddihy each had six points.
Pownal Cal Ripken
POWNAL -- Sign-up for the Pownal Cal Ripken baseball league will take place starting Wednesday and will also run Feb. 11 and 13 at the Pownal Elementary School from 5 to 6:15 p.m.
The league is open to all Pownal and surrounding area children ages 4 to 12. Children 9 and up can play in Cal Ripken sanctioned tournaments.

BYSL hosts sign up
BENNINGTON -- The Bennington Young Women's Softball League is hosting their annual sign-ups. All girls ages 7-12 as of January 1 are encouraged to sign up.
Returning player sign-ups will be held Feb. 12, at the Bennington Fire House on River Street from 6 to 7 p.m. New player sign-ups will be held Feb. 26 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. All first-year players should bring a copy of their birth certificate. Registration fee is $35 for 1 child, $50 for 2 children/family, and $70 for 3 or more.

Lax officials training
BENNINGTON -- The Vermont Lacrosse Officials Association will be offering training clinics throughout the state for individuals interested in officiating boys lacrosse.
The clinics will include 2 man mechanics, technical and personal fouls, field mechanics, proper signaling, verbal and visual communication, penalty enforcement and pre and post game preparation. The clinics are free and pre-registration is required. The clinics will be held on the following days and locations:

BENNINGTON -- The Southern Vermont Stars AAU basketball team are having tryouts for an elite traveling girls' team. Tryouts are Feb. 3 and 10 at Arlington Memorial High School at a time to be announced. Anyone is eligible to try out, but serious candidates should have the equivalent of a varsity skill level.
Monument Soccer signups
BENNINGTON -- The Monument Soccer Club has sign-ups next week at the Bennington Sports Center.
Monument is a soccer club that participates in the Capital District Youth Soccer League in the spring and runs from April-June with a 10-game season.
Any interested boy or girl from U8-U18 can sign up.

Zemianek road race returns May 5
BENNINGTON -- The 35th annual Steve Zemianek Road Race will take place on May 5 at the Park-McCullough House in North Bennington.
There are three different runs, a 3.8-mile course, a 10K course and a half-mile fun run for children.
The entry fee is $15 to pre-register and $3 for the fun run. A family of four can register at a reduced rate of $40.
Awards will be given to the top male and female runner and the top three in each age group.
