Patriots finish 2nd at Rikert

LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP

RIPTON -- The Mount Anthony Union High School Nordic teams each scored a runner-up finish to Champlain Valley Union on Monday at Rikert XC. On the boys side, CVU won with 25 to MAU's 37. Luke Keenan was the top Patriot in fifth with a time of 18 minutes, 20 seconds. Teammate Ben Faller was seventh in 18:24, while Jeremiah Colbath was 10th in 18:35. Caleb Cohen (15th) and Will Buckley (16th) finished out the scoring for MAU.

On the girls side, CVU scored 13, a decisive win over MAU's 47, BFA-Fairfax's 56 and Middlebury's 61. CVU's Taylor Spillane won the race, with MAU's Erin Anderson the top Patriots skier in seventh in 21:23.

Becca Romac was next in 12th, skiing the course in 22:41. Abby Malmborg (13th) and Lauren Driscoll (22nd) were the other scorers for MAU.

Comeback falls short

POULTNEY -- The Arlington Memorial High School boys basketball team got themselves into a 16-0 hole in the first five minutes against Poultney and couldn't come all the way back in a 61-49 loss on Monday night.

The Eagles (4-5) got as close as five in the fourth quarter, but two back-to-back baskets by the Blue Devils stopped the comeback.

Sam White had 23 points and 18 rebounds to lead Poultney. Alex Trayah was the high scorer for the Eagles with 13. Olden Dwyer added 11.

Zemianek road race returns May 5

BENNINGTON -- The 35th annual Steve Zemianek Road Race will take place on May 5 at the Park-McCullough House in North Bennington.

There are three different runs, a 3.8-mile course, a 10K course and a half-mile fun run for children.

The entry fee is $15 to pre-register and $3 for the fun run. A family of four can register at a reduced rate of $40.

Awards will be given to the top male and female runner and the top three in each age group.

Monument Soccer signups

BENNINGTON -- The Monument Soccer Club has sign-ups next week at the Bennington Sports Center. Monument is a soccer club that participates in the Capital District Youth Soccer League in the spring and runs from April-June with a 10-game season.

Any interested boy or girl from U8-U18 can sign up.
