BRATTLEBORO -- Burr and Burton Academy senior Weston Muench scored a game-high 29 to lead the Bulldogs to a season-opening win over Brattleboro on Monday night.
Dave Shehadi added 15 for BBA (1-0), who led 40-24 at the half. Jake Stalcup grabbed 7 rebounds and had four blocks.
Brattleboro drops to 0-1.
MAU dropped in opener
LEE, Mass. -- The Mount Anthony Union High School girls basketball team was out-scored 18-2 in its first quarter of the season, en route to a 55-28 loss to Lee, Mass., on Monday.
The rough first quarter doomed the Patriots (0-1), as the other three quarters were fairly even, according to Mount Anthony coach Courtney Reif.
"They got us at the start and we weren't prepared for it," Reif said.
Junior Makayla Farrara led MAU with 12 points, while Brinkley Legacy had six.
Lee's Stephanie Young led all scorers with 21 points, including scoring her 1,000th career point.
MAU returns home to Kates Gym on Saturday to play Rice at 2:30 p.m.
Cambridge falls to
MECHANICVILLE -- Cambridge Central School's Matt Parmenter led all scorers with 18 points but it wasn't enough to overcome a strong Mechanicville team in a 72-47 loss.
Parmenter hit on three 3-pointers, out of six total for the Indians. A rough third quarter doomed Cambridge (0-2) as Mechanicville out-scored them 24-10.
The Red Raiders had three players in double figures, including Nate Hatalsky with 15, Sal Cimino with 12 and Seth Dunn added 10. Hatalsky went 9-for-9 from the free-throw line.
For Cambridge, Max McNeil was the next highest scorer with 8 points, while Ethan English and Shaeden Mosso each added six.
Cambridge plays Schuylerville at home on Wednesday.
Newell scores top 5 in Quebec, Canada
QUEBEC -- Shaftsbury native and Stratton Mountain School alum Andy Newell finished fifth at the Nordic World Cup event in Quebec. Newell, a former Olympic competitor, was fifth in the men's sprint. It's his second top five run of the season, beginning with a fourth-place finish in Finland a month ago.
