TROY, N.Y. -- Southern Vermont College senior captain Taeshon Johnson became the ninth Mountaineer to record 1,000 career points in a 98-86 loss to MCLA in the first round of the Tri-State Shootout.
Johnson, who came into the game eight points shy of the milestone, reached it midway through the first half on a free throw. Johnson had 27 points and 13 rebounds on the night, both game-highs for SVC (0-5).
"It was a big night for Tae," said SVC head coach Michael McDonough. "It’s unfortunate that it came in a tough loss, but that doesn’t reflect badly on the great career he’s had to this point. We’re excited to see what else he will do this season."
Sophomore Jermaine Campbell had 18 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Tarvaris Jenkins netted 14, while Jacob Schongar chipped in with 10.
St. Joseph 80, SVC 77
TROY, N.Y. -- In the consolation round, SVC came back from a 19-point deficit, but timely free-throw shooting by the College of St. Joseph’s doomed the 0-6 Mountaineers.
SVC led by one with 1:39 left, but St. Joe’s hit 6-of-6 free throws to win it. SVC was led by Taeshon Johnson, who had 31 points and 11 rebounds. He was named to the All-Tournament Team. Jermaine Campbell also had a double-double, 21 points and 11 rebounds.
Argyle tops Hoosick
Lufkin, the leading scorer in Section II a year ago, hit six 3-pointers as Argyle (1-0) outscored the Panthers by 16 in the second half.
Hoosick Falls (0-1) was led by Taylor Baker’s 12 points. Randy Tutunjian added nine points.
