WEST RUTLAND -- Fred Pickering tallied all three goals for Arlington Memorial High School as the Eagles dispatched West Rutland, 3-1, in both teams’ season-opener on Wednesday.
Pickering had two goals in the first half and iced the game with one in the second for Arlington, which never trailed.
"He had a good game but probably could’ve scored even more," AMHS coach Todd Wilkins said. "He had seven or eight shots from good scoring chances."
Alex Trayah, Payton Agresta and goalkeeper DJ Jennings each notched an assist. Jennings also finished with six saves as the Eagles avenged their season-ending playoff loss from last fall.
Brandon Groh had the lone strike for the Golden Horde.
Otters upend Bulldogs
MANCHESTER -- Otter Valley found the back of the net once in each half en route to beating Burr and Burton Academy, 2-0, in field hockey on Wednesday.
The Otters had previously topped the Bulldogs, 4-1, in a preseason scrimmage, but BBA (0-1) coach Barb Muench said the season-opener showed great improvement for her young team.
"We felt like we made a big leap in this game," Muench said.
Cassie Brown made nine saves for BBA. The Otters outshot the hosts 11-5.
Petitt claims MACC club championship
BENNINGTON -- Bob Petitt carved out a two-stroke victory over 54 holes of golf to claim the club championship at Mount Anthony Country Club over the weekend.
Petitt’s three-day total of 229 was two shots better than Tom Perrott and six ahead of third-place finisher Aaron Wood. Jeff Wilkinson (gross) and Larry Andrews (net) took the top honors in the men’s handicap tournament.
Dot Cleary edged Linda Jane Parson, 162-177, to win the 36-hole women’s gross championship. Geri Ann Fennessy earned the top net prize.
Mike Pinsonneault (gross) and Jay Cleary (net) were tops in the honor’s flight of players 65 and older.
Mountaineers blast Eagles
POULTNEY -- Southern Vermont College continued its torrid start to the season by posting a 5-1 win at Green Mountain College in women’s soccer on Wednesday.
With the win, the Mountaineers’ third straight with at least five goals, SVC (3-0-0) matches its win total from 2011.
Kaitlyn Forant scored twice, while Erin Student, Katie Raymond and Hannah Pease each added single strikes. Jocelyn Ortega dished out two assists for SVC, which outshot the Eagles 17-2.
SVC volleyball takes down Castleton
CASTLETON -- Improving to 3-0 on the season, the Southern Vermont College women’s volleyball team posted a 3-0 win against Castleton State on Wednesday.
The Mountaineers dominated the first set, 25-9, before cruising 25-11 and 25-15.
Junior Elaine Guerrero finished with seven kills and six aces for SVC. Vivian Delgado racked up a match-best 18 digs.
Southern Vermont heads to the Victory Promotions Invitational in northern New York Friday. Castleton drops to 0-3.
Spartans dump SVC
CASTLETON -- Castleton State College piled on the goals Wednesday night, defeating Southern Vermont College, 7-1, in men’s soccer action.
Burr and Burton Academy grad Danny Favreau netted twice for the Spartans, while Zac Conlogue also scored a brace. Three other Castleton players tallied once.
SVC (0-3) only trailed by two at the half before Castleton opened the second stanza with four straight to blow the game open. Derek Snow had the lone goal for the Mountaineers in the 82nd minute.
Both of Favreau’s goals came in the first half and were his first as a Spartan.
MAU wrestling softball tournament
BENNINGTON -- On Sept. 22, the Mount Anthony Union High School wrestling team will host their annual fall one-pitch softball tournament at Upper Willow Park starting at 8 a.m. Entry Fee is $150 per team and to enter your team, contact Wayne Call at 802-952-8932.
Benn. Youth Bowling
BENNINGTON -- Registration for Bennington Youth Bowling will take place at Bennington Lanes on Sept. 8 and 15 from 9:30 to noon.
All Bennington-area youth from 6 to 19 are invited to join the league, which begins Sept. 22. Registration fee is $15 and people must pre-register to participate.
Maple Leaf 1/2 marathon
MANCHESTER -- It’s not too late to register for the Maple Leaf Half Marathon and 5K. On-line registration is now closed, however, you can still fill out a paper registration form. Forms may be downloaded from the website or pick one up at the Manchester and the Mountains Chamber of Commerce.
Either hand in your completed registration form at the Manchester Chamber of Commerce, no later than Thursday, or stop at the Perfect Wife Restaurant, on Rt. 11/30 in Manchester, on Friday between the hours of 4 and 8 PM. You may also register on race day at the Manchester Recreation Park.
The race committee urges you to sign up before race day, if at all possible. Both the half marathon and the 5K will take place Saturday. Google the race online, or call the Manchester & the Mountains Chamber of Commerce (802-362-6313) for details.
