MANCHESTER -- The Southern Vermont Storm jumped in front of the New England Hawks on the first play from scrimmage and never looked back, picking up a 28-13 New England Football League win at Applejack Field.

Marcus Anderson caught a touchdown bomb from Mike Stephens on the Storm’s first play to give the hosts a lead they would not relinquish. Southern Vermont (2-2) led 21-7 at halftime after yielding a last-minute score.

"The momentum was on our side right away and that was big," Storm coach Tighe Stratton said.

The Hawks (1-3) trimmed the lead to 21-13 before Nick Bennett secured a late interception for the storm and Mike Woodson added his third rushing touchdown of the night to cap the win.

The Storm travels to Barre on Sunday for a game against the Vermont Ravens.

Youth cheer sign-ups

BENNINGTON -- The Mount Anthony Youth Cheer Association will hold a registration session on Aug. 23 at the Bennington Recreation Center.

The cost is $75 and includes a full uniform and a practice shirt. Children must be present at registration. Space is limited. MAYCA offers a grades K-6 team for children who can independenlty perform a back walkover.

MAYCA also provides a grades 3-6 team for all children no matter their individual skill level. Practices will be held on Fridays from 4 to 6 p.m. for September and October. For more info contact Jaime at maycacheer@comcast.net.

Battle Day 5K on Aug. 18

BENNINGTON -- The eighth annual Battle Day 5K will be held on Saturday, Aug. 18, starting at 9:30 a.m. Registration is ongoing and cost $12 before the race and $15 on race day. On the 18th, registration begins at 8 a.m. Batten Kill Valley Runners get a discounted registration race. There will also be a half-mile kids fun run.

MAU tryouts

BENNINGTON -- Tryouts for fall sports teams at Mount Anthony Union High School begin today for varsity and JV football. Tryouts for varsity boys soccer, varsity girls soccer, cross-country and varsity cheerleading will be Aug. 16 and Aug. 20 for varsity field hockey.

For specific starting times and locations for tryouts of all MAUHS and MAUMS fall sports teams, visit the MAU Activities Website at www.maupatriots.com.

Participants are reminded to turn in a sports participation/physical form on the first day of tryouts. This form can be downloaded off the website.

MAYAA football

BENNINGTON -- Registration for Mount Anthony Youth Athletic Association football will take place August 14 and 15 at the Bennington Recreation Center from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Returning players ages 8 to 12 who will not be entering seventh grade will need to be at Willow Park on August 16 at 5:30 p.m. for the combine. For more information, contact Lori Gratton at 802-447-2510.

Bowling teams needed

BENNINGTON -- There will be a meeting of the greater Bennington Youth Bowling Association on Thursday, Aug. 16, at 7 p.m. at Bennington Lanes. All volunteers involved with youth bowling should attend.

Summer tennis camps

BENNINGTON -- The Bennington Tennis Center is hosting summer youth camps for kids ages 8 to 18. There will be a session Aug. 14-17.

The camps, led by pros Seth Gabriel and Dan Rowe, run Tuesday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Kids will participate in various warm up activities followed by drills, games and other tennis-related activities. The cost for the camp is $120, which includes a T-shirt. To sign up, call 802-447-7557.

Junior golf camp

BENNINGTON -- Mount Anthony Country Club head pro Doug Ruttle will hold an instructional camp for junior golfers between ages 8 and 16 this summer.

The session will take place Aug. 14 to 17, costing $99 per junior golfer, payable to Douglas A. Ruttle, PGA. Sign-up forms are available at the golf course.

Blue Lollipop Road

BENNINGTON -- Blue Lollipop Road hosts Mount Anthony Union High School’s women’s soccer alumni weekend. Play It Forward events will take place August 17 and August 18 in Bennington and Shaftsbury:

* A Welcome Back Party will be at Madison Brewing Company on the 17th at 7 p.m.

* The Strong Mojo summit (11:30 a.m.) and alumni soccer game (1 p.m.) will be at Howard Park in Shaftsbury on August 18. All alumni are encouraged to register to participate/play.

* A Memorial Scholarship will be awarded in honor of Maria Greene and Brandy Brown, two former MAU soccer players who were killed in a car accident in 1994.

* 25 years of MAU women’s soccer will be celebrated and former coaches will be recognized.
