Roundup: Marauders nab second in division

LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP

WHITE RIVER JCT. -- The Bennington Marauders finished second overall in their division at the Vermont Swim Association Championships at the Upper Valley Aquatics Center.

Three Bennington swimmers had top 4 performances as the Marauders finished close behind Woodstock in Division IV.

Heather Foley was the biggest winner of the day for Bennington, winning the 100-yard butterfly, placing second in the 50-yard butterfly, and taking bronze in the 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard backstroke.

She won the 100 fly in 1 minute, 1.96 seconds.

Phebe Hall was fourth in the 100-yard individual medley, while Zach LaForest was fourth in the 50-yard freestyle.

Also competing and posting best times was: Kylee Hall, Caden Hall, Grace Burhans, Sienna Brosemer, Anthony Mazzola, Zoey Haar, Kate Ahearn, Emily Barlow, Ben Hein, Ben Medvedev, Morgan Flynn, Sarah Martin and Bridget Ahearn.

Brandmeyer, Kuzmich win Moonlight race

POWNAL -- Under clear but muggy moonlit skies, newcomer Marc Brandmeyer of Bennington and veteran moonlight runner Cady Kuzmich of Greenwich, N.Y., led a field of 115 runners Saturday night in the 13th running of the Batten Kill Valley Runners’ "Moonlight in Vermont" Midnight Road Race.

In his first crack at the hilly four-mile course, MAU senior Brandmeyer’s time of 22:40 provided an 11-second margin over runner-up Joe Carter of Panton. Brian Kirchner of Anchorage, Alaska, finished third in 23:57.

It was the first Moonlight victory for Kuzmich, of Greenwich, N.Y., who began competing in the race four years ago and placed second the last two years. Kuzmich finished in 28:32, followed by Erin Anderson of Bennington, in 29:03, and Bethany Powida of Delmar, N.Y., in 29:34.

Jeremy Neill was the first Pownal finisher and 6th overall. An additional 12 participants completed the two-mile Community Ramble. Bill Botzow was the oldest Pownal resident participating, and Makayla Gelheiser was the youngest. Sebastian Durfee was chosen as "Most Visible in the Moonlight." The events were sponsored by Vermont Moonlight Cookies, with prizes donated by Might Food Farm. The race benefited the Pownal Valley Fire Department.

MAU tryout dates

BENNINGTON -- Tryouts for fall sports teams at Mount Anthony Union High School will begin on Monday, Aug. 13, for varsity and JV football. Tryouts for varsity boys soccer, varsity girls soccer, cross-country and varsity cheerleading will be Aug. 16 and Aug. 20 for varsity field hockey.

For specific starting times and locations for tryouts of all MAUHS and MAUMS fall sports teams, visit the MAU Activities Website at www.maupatriots.com. Participants are reminded to turn in a sports participation/physical form on the first day of tryouts. This form can be downloaded off the website.

Bowling teams needed

HOOSICK, N.Y. -- The Wednesday International League at the Barbecue is looking to fill 3 five man teams for the upcoming season. Contacts are Louis (518) 686-9651, Jack (518) 686-5751, and Daryl (518) 686-5467.

The Tuesday women’s league are looking for bowlers as well. There is a meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Barbecue Recreation that all team captains are encouraged to attend.

Bennington youth bowling

BENNINGTON -- There will be a meeting of the greater Bennington Youth Bowling Association on Thursday, Aug. 16, at 7 p.m. at Bennington Lanes. All volunteers involved with youth bowling should attend.

Summer tennis camps

BENNINGTON -- The Bennington Tennis Center is hosting summer youth camps for kids ages 8 to 18. There will be sessions on Aug. 7-10 and Aug. 14-17.

The camps, led by pros Seth Gabriel and Dan Rowe, run Tuesday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Kids will participate in various warm up activities followed by drills, games and other tennis-related activities.

The cost for the camp is $120, which includes a T-shirt. To sign up, call 802-447-7557.

Lee Goldsmith tourney

BENNINGTON -- Teams of high school athletes can now register for the 2012 Lee Goldsmith Memorial Soccer Tournament, set for Willow Park on Aug. 11.

The tournament, organized in memory of Lee Goldsmith, a former player at Mount Anthony Union High School who succumbed to cancer in 2009, is open to student-athletes enrolled in high school as of September 2012.

The seven-a-side tourney consists of half-hour games using large goals and no offside rule. Registration costs $70 per team -- teams must be all-male or co-ed only. Teams must register by Aug. 10 by calling Jeremy Neill (802-833-5969) or emailing him at jneill@svsu.org. Play begins at 11 a.m.

Junior golf camp

BENNINGTON -- Mount Anthony Country Club head pro Doug Ruttle will hold an instructional camp for junior golfers between ages 8 and 16 this summer.

The session will take place Aug. 14 to 17, costing $99 per junior golfer, payable to Douglas A. Ruttle, PGA. Sign-up forms are available at the golf course.

MAUHS cheerleader tryouts

BENNINGTON -- The Mount Anthony Union High School cheerleading team will host tryouts on Aug. 17 and 18 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. each day at the MAU track. Choices will be made on Aug. 20.

BENNINGTON -- The Mount Anthony Youth Athletic Association football program is looking for players, coaches and volunteers for this season.

Bat Brats host tryouts

BENNINGTON -- The Southern Vermont Bat Brats are looking for experienced pitchers and position players to join our growing organization for the fall 2012 and spring/summer 2013 season. Tryouts will take place on Aug. 11.

There is currently have one U-12 and one U-14 team. Interested players should call their age group coach with questions and to pre-register for tryouts.

Blue Lollipop Road

BENNINGTON -- Blue Lollipop Road hosts Mount Anthony Union High School’s women’s soccer alumni weekend. Play It Forward events will take place August 17 and August 18 in Bennington and Shaftsbury:

* A Welcome Back Party will be at Madison Brewing Company on the 17th at 7 p.m.

* The Strong Mojo summit (11:30 a.m.) and alumni soccer game (1 p.m.) will be at Howard Park in Shaftsbury on August 18. All alumni are encouraged to register to participate/play.

* A Memorial Scholarship will be awarded in honor of Maria Greene and Brandy Brown, two former MAU soccer players who were killed in a car accident in 1994.

* 25 years of MAU women’s soccer will be celebrated and former coaches will be recognized.
