CASTLETON -- Bennington Post 13 starter Tyler Kunzmann struck out 23 Lakes Region batters in 10 innings, but gave up the winning run on a bases-loaded walk as Lakes Region beat Bennington for the second time this season, 3-2, at Castleton State College in American Legion play.
Kunzmann allowed four hits and also drove in both runs for the 8-2 Post 13ers.
Lakes Region scored the winning run with two outs in the 10th inning. Sean Shepardson started the inning with a single. He stole second and took third on a passed ball. Eric Jakubowski fanned, but reached on an passed ball. After the next hitter was intentionally walked, Derek Hernandez walked on a 3-1 pitch to force home the winning run.
Dan Brown earned the win for Lakes Region, going all 10 innings, allowing six hits and 9 strikeouts.
Kunzmann drove in the first run in the opening inning with a single, then tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth after another RBI single.
Bennington remains in the top spot in the Southern Division at 8-2. Rutland is a half-game behind at 8-3 and Brattleboro is 1 1/2 back at 7-4.
Post 13 is back in action on Saturday for a doubleheader against the Vermont Outlaws.
Zem’s summer track meets return
BENNINGTON -- Following a tradition started more than 30 years ago by longtime Mount Anthony Union High School track coach Steve Zemianek, Kathleen Newton and Tony Napolitano are pleased to announce the return of "Coach Zem’s Summer Track Meets."
These meets are open to the general public and will be held on the following three Wednesdays (July 11, July 18, and July 25). There is no charge to participate and individuals of all ages are encouraged to join in the fun.
Meets will begin at 7 p.m. at the Zemianek Track at MAU. Events this summer will include the 50-meter dash, the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, the 400-meter run, the 800-meter run, the 1600-meter run and the 3200- meter run.
Hoosick horse owner wins at Summer Festival
EAST DORSET -- The annual Vermont Summer Festival horse show officially opened on Wednesday, July 4, at Harold Beebe Farm in East Dorset, VT, kicking off six weeks of top hunter and jumper competition.
Local competitor Susan Wheeler had the honor of being crowned the first champion of the 2012 Festival, taking home the title in the New England Novice Adult Rider division riding Top Honors, a 14-year-old thoroughbred gelding owned by Hoosick’s Linda Orton.
"It’s very exciting to see someone else win on your horse," said Orton, who runs Honor Own Farm. "It’s one of the greatest things you can experience, and being the first champion of this year’s festival makes it even more special."
Running through August 12, the Vermont Summer Festival offers more than $750,000 in prize money, making it the richest sporting event based on purse in the state. The largest-rated hunter/jumper horse show in New England, the Vermont Summer Festival attracts the best athletes, including Olympic medalists, from across the country and around the globe.
Competition begins at 8 a.m. daily, Wednesday through Sunday. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. On Saturday and Sunday, admission is $7 for adults, $5 for children.
Youth lacrosse camp
BENNINGTON -- There will be a boys lacrosse camp from July 16th to July 19th at Willow Park. Boys ages 5 to 8 attend for a half day from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., while boys ages 9 to 15 attend for a full day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Equipment is available if needed.

Junior golf camp
BENNINGTON -- Mount Anthony Country Club head pro Doug Ruttle will hold instructional camps for junior golfers between ages 8 and 16 this summer.
One session takes place from July 16 to 19; the other is set for Aug. 14 to 17. A session costs $99 per junior golfer, payable to Douglas A. Ruttle, PGA. Sign-up forms are available at the golf course.
Free soccer camp
BENNINGTON -- Grace Christian School will host a free soccer camp from July 9 to 12 for boys and girls ages 6 to 12. The camp runs from 9 a.m. to noon each day. To register, call 447-2233.
Lady Patriot Basketball School in July
BENNINGTON -- Mount Anthony Union High School will host the annual Lady Patriot Basketball School from July 9-13. There will be two sessions: a camp for players 8-12 and a camp for 13-and-up.

Beanbag charity tournament
BENNINGTON -- The Purple Pride of Vermont will host a cornhole tournament at Ramuntos on Main Street in Bennington to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project and the local Veterans Outreach Center.
The tournament will be on July 14 and cost $25 to register. The money is used for registration, two drinks, a goodie bag and chances to win prizes.
Check in is at noon and the tournament begins at 1 p.m.

Summer tennis camps
BENNINGTON -- The Bennington Tennis Center is hosting summer youth camps for kids ages 8 to 18. There will be five different sessions -- July 17-20, July 24-27, July 31-Aug. 3, Aug. 7-10 and Aug. 14-17.
The camps, led by pros Seth Gabriel and Dan Rowe, run Tuesday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Kids will participate in various warm up activities followed by drills, games and other tennis-related activities.
The cost for the camp is $120, which includes a T-shirt. To sign up, call 802-447-7557.
Arlington Soccer Camp takes place in July
ARLINGTON -- The Arlington Soccer Camp enters its 35th year this summer, resuming for Arlington area youth players from July 23 to 27. For children entering first grade through seventh grade, the camp goes from 9 a.m. to noon each day at the Fisher school fields.
The cost is $90 per child ($60 per each additional sibling). The camp, directed by Castleton State College men’s soccer coach John Werner, teaches skills and tactics through fun games with emphasis on teamwork, sportsmanship and fun.

Storm hosting youth football camp
BENNINGTON -- The Southern Vermont Storm is hosting a youth football camp from August 6-9.
The camp, for kids 8 to 12 years old, will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at the the Vermont Veterans Home on North Street.
Former Mount Anthony Union High School football coach and Storm player Jim Fischer will work with the kids to teach the fundamentals and techniques of football. It will also provide instruction on all aspects of the game such as running, throwing, catching, blocking, tackling and speed drills.
Current Storm and MAU players will also be at the camp. The cost is $60. Shoulder pads and helmets will be supplied, so players are asked to bring cleats, mouth guard, shorts and football pants.
Bennington Basketball School
BENNINGTON -- The Mount Anthony Union High School boys basketball team is hosting its 41st annual summer camp.
The camp will take place from July 16-20 at the Mount Anthony high school gym.
There are two sessions: one in the morning for kids ages 12-15 from 8 a.m. to noon and one in the afternoon for 7 to 11 year olds from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The camp costs $110 per camper and includes a t-shirt and a ball.

Blue Lollipop Road
SHAFTSBURY -- The Blue Lollipop Road Reunion Soccer Weekend will take place on August 17 and 18 at Howard Park in Shaftsbury.
After a welcome party on the 17th at Madison’s, a Strong Mojo Summit and a memorial scholarship will be awarded.
The scholarship is in memory of former Mount Anthony Union High School soccer players Maria Greene and Brandy Brown, killed in a car accident in 1994.
At 1 p.m., there will be an alumni soccer game at Howard Park for any alumni who want to play.
