WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The Southern Vermont College women’s volleyball team turned in arguably its biggest win in program history on Wednesday night, beating Williams College 3-1.

The Ephs took the first game, 25-23, but SVC won the next three (25-17, 25-14 and 25-22).

"They weren’t setting it to Jessica [Alvarez] and they looked timid offensively," said SVC coach Josh Stokes about the first set. "At the end of the first, she smoked one for a point and it took the confidence out of Williams a little bit."

Alvarez led the Mountaineers (15-2) with 18 kills and seven aces. Alyssa Manzer was second with 10 kills and three aces. Hershey Canta was the leading setter, scoring 41 assists. On defense, Alvarez and Joanna Hogue led the way with 17 digs a piece.

According to the SVC athletic department, the win was the first time in school history that a women’s program in any sport had defeated Williams, which was ranked 13th in the regional rankings.

Bulldogs blank Minutemen

MILL RIVER -- Four different players hit the score sheet for the Burr and Burton Academy girls soccer team in a 4-0 win over Mill River on Wednesday.

The teams played scoreless soccer for the first 36 minutes, then BBA (4-2) scored two goals in less than a minute. With 3:44 left, Lizzie Jorgensen opened the scoring and then Cara Corvino put one in the back of the net 28 seconds later for a 2-0 halftime lead.

The Bulldogs put the game away in the second half. Abby Marmer drilled in a cross from Daisy Sullivan with 14:38 left, then Sam Labate scored off an assist from Jorgensen.

BBA’s next game is scheduled for Friday at Applejack Field against Brattleboro.

Panthers fall to Indians

SCHAGHTICOKE, N.Y. -- The Hoosick Falls Central School golf team was downed by Hoosic Valley, 4-1, at the Battenkill golf course on Wednesday.

Kealan Hitt was the lone winner for the Panthers, beating his opponent 2-up. Eric Bloomer shot a 41 (6-over-par) to qualify for sectionals. The medalist was Hoosic Valley’s Frank Acker, with a 39.

Panthers, HV draw

HOOSICK, N.Y. -- The Hoosick Falls Central School boys soccer team held Hoosic Valley, the top team in the Wasaren League, scoreless on Wednesday afternoon. Unfortunately for HFCS, they couldn’t put a ball in the net as the teams played to a 0-0 draw.

"We played really well tonight and had the majority of possession," said HFCS coach Mike Young. "We had quality chances."

Cody Gaines was the star of the game for the Panthers, making 10 saves and keeping the Indians out of the net.

"We’re getting the ball into the middle, but not finishing," Young said. Hoosick Falls travels to Granville on Friday.

Hoosac wins first game

HOOSICK, N.Y. -- The Hoosac School Owls boys soccer team earned its first win of the season over Stratton Mountain School, 4-0.

Philippe Gadoury scored the first goal, the eventual game-winner. Patrick Lepage, Victor Contreras and Travis Bobb each potted a goal for the Owls.

The next game for Hoosac is Saturday against the New York Military Academy.
