SOUTH BURLINGTON, VT. >> An Afghanistan combat veteran from Winooski has denied charges that he fired shots to threaten a group of people he found near train tracks in South Burlington.

Det. Ron Bliss says 37-year-old Kyle O'Donnell pleaded not guilty Monday to multiple counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, unlawful search, unlawful restraint and reckless endangerment.

Police say O'Donnell, dressed in black tactical gear, came across a group of people walking near train tracks around 9:10 p.m. Saturday. O'Donnell allegedly ordered the group to the ground and informed him they were unwanted on the property.

The victims told police that O'Donnell fired his weapon twice during the encounter to scare them.

Attorney Jessica Burke says O'Donnell served his country and plans to fight the charges "vehemently."
