ST. JONSBURY, VT. >> After 15 years of dormancy, St. Johnsbury's roughly $770,000 Railroad Street Enhancement Project is finally underway.
The Caledonian Record reports (http://bit.ly/2agVECQ ) Barre-based contractor Capitol Earthmoving began stripping concrete in front of Caplan's Army Store on Monday as part of the three-month improvement effort.
The project will replace sidewalks on both sides of Railroad Street in the downtown area between Eastern Avenue and Portland street. New streetlights will also be installed as well as the addition of four new trees.
Selectman Jeff Moore says St. Johnsbury was awarded its initial grant for the project in 2001 after the Railroad Street fire, but the work never materialized.
Funding for the project includes about $500,000 in grant money and $220,000 in municipal dollars.
Construction is expected to be completed by Oct. 25.
