FERRISBURGH, VT. >> Vermont officials are giving endangered little brown bats a new home at the Kingsland Bay State Park in Ferrisburgh.

The Rutland Herald reports that the Vermont departments of Fish & Wildlife and Forests, Parks and Recreation partnered with Green Mountain Power to install a new, donated "bat condo" to give the little brown bats a safe habitat in the park.

The 1,100-pound, 4-by-8-feet condo designed, created and funded by Joe Gardner of Milton aims to provide shelter for bats to raise young safely away from predators.

A colony of the bats live in some of the public buildings at the park. The new condo gives them a long-term secure home.

The little brown bat has become endangered in Vermont as a result of white-nose syndrome, a deadly fungal disease.
