BURLINGTON, VT. >> Burlington officials have passed a revised version of a decades-old ban on adults wearing masks.
The ordinance had prohibited adults over age 21 from wearing masks, hoods or other clothing that obscures a person's face. City councilors voted on a new ordinance Monday that allows people to wear masks as long as the individuals aren't committing a crime.
Opponents of the 1962 mask ban had argued that the ban illegally restricted speech and kept residents from expressing themselves in a lawful way.
Police say the old ordinance was rarely enforced. Mayor Miro Weinberger said last week that he directed police not to arrest anyone during the city's annual Mardi Gras parade last weekend.
WCAX-TV reports that the revised ordinance goes into effect immediately.
