WHITE RIVER JUNCTION (AP) -- A man was shot and two other people also were injured in a Springfield apartment as part of a dispute about the possible theft of heroin, police said Thursday.
Another man, Leon Jiggetts, of Newark, New Jersey, was charged Thursday with attempted murder and other offenses in connection with the Wednesday shooting. He appeared in court in White River Junction on Thursday but did not enter a plea.
Jiggetts, 26, is due back in court on Friday to enter his plea, Windsor County state’s attorney Michael Kainen said.
Court documents say Jiggetts, Jabbar Chandler, 33, of Charlestown, New Hampshire, and a teenage boy identified as BA went to the apartment to confront Joseph Atkinson, 19, about rumors the boy was stealing heroin from him.
Police say the boy, 16, told them he was carrying a baseball bat, Jiggetts was carrying a gun and Chandler was empty-handed.
People in the home told police the two men and the boy entered through an unlocked door and asked for Atkinson. After Atkinson was shot, the two other people in the apartment, a husband and wife, suffered minor injuries but not gunshots.
Police said that after Jiggetts, Chandler and the boy left the apartment they were driven to Bellows Falls by a woman who had been waiting for them. Jiggetts was arrested in Bellows Falls.
Chandler later surrendered to police. He was being held in New Hampshire and couldn’t be reached for comment. He has been charged in Vermont with aggravated assault and other offenses.
It’s unclear whether the boy was held. The woman who drove them hasn’t been charged, but police said more charges are possible.
The court documents said Jiggetts has a long criminal history, including charges in Brattleboro in March for the sale and possession of heroin and cocaine. The documents said he regularly traveled between Vermont and New Jersey by train to obtain more heroin.
