TROY, N.Y. -- The first state Mission of Mercy free dental clinic is coming to the Capital Region.
The NYSMOM clinic will provide a range of dental service for all ages. Service is available on a first-come basis, including cleanings, fillings, extractions, x-rays, oral surgery, root canal treatment on front teeth, partial prosthesis and general health screenings. The only services that won’t be provided are those requiring IV Sedation. Pain relievers will not be distributed at the event.
"It’s important to us that people understand that oral health is part of your overall health," said Brian Kennedy, NYSMOM co-chairman and Troy dentist.
The two-day dental clinic is to run from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on June 13-14 at the Hudson Valley Community College’s Edward F. McDonough Sports Complex. Organizers hope to treat more than 1,000 patients at the event.
So far about 1,200 volunteers have signed up to help and they will be broken down into two, six-hour shifts each day. Each shift will have more than 100 dentists, 65 dental assistants and many more volunteers doing non-medical tasks such as traffic and crowd monitoring, foreign language interpreters (all languages needed, especially Spanish), sign language interpreters, patient escorts, as well as people dismantling the clinic after the event.
About 85 percent of the volunteers are from the Capital Region, but dentists are coming from Buffalo, New York City and out of state.
"We encourage not only individuals to sign-up to volunteer for this critical outreach effort, but also area businesses to consider having employees give some of their time to help us at this year’s NYSMOM Free Dental Clinic," Kennedy said.
A Troy dentist for 32 years, Kennedy believes what will make this event successful come down to three factors. The volunteers from the community and dental community operating the event, the support of the dental industry that is donating supplies and letting the NYSMOM borrow equipment, and financial support from charities to fund the event.
The dentists and assistants plan on doing the one most important thing that each patient needs to get rid of pain or infection. Then they will provide whatever other needs the patient may have, that can be accomplished in one day.
