Pipe bursts, flooding St. Johnsbury mall
ST. JOHNSBURY (AP) -- The Green Mountain Mall in St. Johnsbury is closed after an underground pipe burst, flooding the buildings.
WCAX-TV reports that contractors were at the mall on Tuesday starting the cleanup.
Fire officials say the mall was flooded overnight and by the time they arrived most of the building was covered in 1 to 4 inches of water.
Storm to dump 6-12 in central, southern Vt.
MONTPELIER (AP) -- A winter storm heading to New England is expected to dump 6 to 12 inches in parts of Vermont, which has missed out on some of the Northeast’s recent snowstorms.
Snow will start falling early Wednesday morning with the heaviest snowfall through midday.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm with forecasts for 4 to 8 inches in northern Vermont, including Burlington, and 6 to 12 inches in central and southern parts of the state. An inch of snow an hour is expected during the middle of the day.
The weather service says the storm could cause difficult driving conditions and reduced visibility.
Cigarette caused house fire, 7 escape
MILTON (AP) -- Firefighters in the Vermont town of Milton say a carelessly discarded cigarette is to blame for a house fire in which all seven people inside escaped.
Firefighters they responded to the fire at about 10:15 p.m. Monday. They said the occupants were alerted to the fire in the basement when smoke detectors began sounding. No one was hurt.
The fire department was able to extinguish the fire and contain the majority of the fire damage to the basement.
Damages are estimated in excess of $15,000.
