Scott to update on school emergency preparedness
HYDE PARK (AP) -- Lt. Gov. Phil Scott traveled to the northern Vermont town of Hyde Park to provide an update on emergency preparedness in Vermont schools.
Scott, who made the trip Tuesday, says the Vermont Enhanced 911 Board and other state agencies have been coordinating efforts to make sure there’s a telephone in every classroom whose physical location is correctly recorded in the E-911 database.
The work has been underway since shortly after the mass shooting at a school in Newtown, Conn.
It has involved the Vermont Agency of Education Department of Public Safety, police chiefs, sheriffs and Scott’s office.
Officials say the testing has shown that in many instances, the addresses transmitted to the E-911 system to not actually match the location of the phones.
Burlington officer wants more info on arrest
ST. ALBANS (AP) -- The lawyer for a high-ranking Burlington police officer arrested on a drunken driving charge says prosecutors are withholding information key to his defense.
Burlington Deputy Chief Andi Higbee denies charges he was driving drunk when he was pulled over last month by a state trooper on Route 105 in Sheldon.
WCAX-TV reports (http://bit.ly/15vRKxR ) Higbee is challenging the probable cause for the stop and whether the trooper was trying to reach a quota set for the special DUI patrol he was conducting.
Higbee’s lawyer wants to see video of another stop the trooper made that night and review records related to the DUI patrol. Prosecutors say that information is not relevant to the case.
Death of suspect in killing due to ulcer
BURLINGTON (AP) -- An autopsy has determined the death of a 76-year-old Vermont man suspected of killing a Barton woman was caused by an ulcer.
The Burlington Free Press (http://bfpne.ws/17q4FuW) reports that Carlton Bickford, of Glover, also suffered from a number of other health conditions.
Police say Bickford turned himself in to Lyndonville police July 26 and told officers he had killed 72-year-old Rachel Coburn, of Barton. State troopers later found Coburn’s body at her home.
Bickford told investigators he shot Coburn after an argument.
Bickford was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder. He died at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington on Aug. 23.
